I'm mostly playing. If it wasn't reputedly bad to drive and have the IMS issues, I'd consider a 996. It's ugly, but I have some nostalgic feelings around it, so I don't hate them entirely.

996s are quite fun to drive... They feel very small and light and don't have a ton of power, so they're possibly the last 911 (997 is less-so on both metrics) where you can drive it like you're really wringing its neck. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
The interior can be a let down, especially at the price point when new, but it's probably fine now in a 20+ year old car (that nostalgic allowance) and I don't even mind the way the second gen headlights look... I know there's an underlying anti-911 sentiment here, but I think the 996s could hold their own and should be considered by anyone looking for a fun, if not quasi-practical, toy at that price point.
I don’t hate 911’s, they just aren’t even close to my first choice at their price point.

My parents had a 996 C4S back in the day, and it was pretty slow and boring.
It was side by side with my sister's old wrx stg2 that made 200whp.
It didnt do alot for the males in my family, but the perfect girls car!

The criteria for being a Beyond Baller is simply knowing you are one.
My hybrid burns Diesel & Oil
I'd drive a 996 Turbo. It's neat. But like $40k neat.
I liked rage2's 996.

I'd love a 996 or a 997, but I won't be able to afford either for a while yet...

Maybe my standards are just low, but I enjoyed my M6 and to this day, think the SMG II is less bad than its reputation that's regurgitated ad nauseum by people that have in all likelihood never driven one. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
But since I even like 996s (for what they are) and 911s in general, I might just be wrong about cars in general...
There was a Beyonder with a modified 996, with GT2 body parts, and Techart wing + Volk wheels. Loved that car.
edit ah here it is
There is a dude with very clean blue 996TT in my neighborhood, license plate "NOIMS"
I agree interior gets a pass on "nostalgia" now.

Besides the rarri he also has a stripped down track prepped e91 M3
I saw his 430 downtown earlier in the week, front right wheel has a massive bend in it haha. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I had an automatic 996TT and that was not a fun gearbox. Great car (in the winter) but gearbox really put a damper on it. And yea that interior lol. Drove a couple of 997s with PDK and it was terrific. That's my sweet spot for 911 turbos before the big bloat.
As for the M6, YMMV and as much as I like making fun of @killramos that is a terrific car with SMG, especially if you slap a good exhaust on it. It's not close to being faster than a 996 TT overall, especially at our elevation, but that engine note and top down can't be beat.

@rage2 was the gearbox the only thing you didn’t like from a driving perspective?
I didn’t like the car being so understeery and lack of turn in. Tried all sorts of alignment settings no luck. In the winter there’s enough power to kick the tail out so it’s fun. Summer need 2x the hp because there’s so much rear grip. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
It was my winter car. I rarely drove it in the summer, became gfs car. She loved it.

Weird question. They haven’t made m6’s in years, but yea I’d buy an M8, the current m6 I guess, over a 911 if that’s a more relevant current comparison. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Especially considering how much 911 prices have ballooned.

We're talking about how the current 911 is too big and overweight, and you want something a couple feet longer and wider, plus 1000 lbs heavier? BMW fan boys man...
The list of cars I would buy before a 911 is long and distinguished, and varied. And the M8 is on it.
If you were looking to me to defend a 911 you are barking up the wrong tree.

There's a similar one that does the school run at my kid's school... Always stands out.
Probably also on Killy's long and distinguished list of cars he'd take over a 911
