It's early season like every year: There be rocks...
I was there last Monday Nov 7. There are barely any exposed rocks unlike how Louise usually is early in the year. It didn't snow for a few days so it was hard-packed. Banff avenue downhill of the first gondola stop is closed since there's no snow. Spent most of my time on Mt Standish that day. Overall, pretty decent conditions for opening week.Originally posted by -relk-
Anybody been to Sunshine yet? Looks like they have quite a bit open, but wanted to see if anyone has had first hand experience their yet this year.
looks like they got about 10 cm overnight

I was there yesterday, conditions were pretty decent for very early season IMO.
Looking forward to next weekend.

Place is a rock-field most of the time, especially after a week of heat and sun. Not the best terrain either, but I do go there in the spring.
Highwood was pretty decent 2 weeks ago. It's kind of a shame they don't keep that highway open, there is some touring potential back there. I was contemplating touring in in January and winter camping up there, though I'm not sure whether that's technically allowed. 16kms to the top of the pass isn't that bad and then you get everything all to yourself.
On the map for me is more recon in Waterton/and 93S this year and getting deeper into rogers pass. Few asukan trips too. I was thinking of doing Stanley Mitchell hut again but the 27kms in is kinda fucked.
Yea I hate that Takakkaw road. I'm coming the other way by Yoho traverse this spring. I'm also a fan of Rogers but it's getting pretty busy and it's pretty far. I find myself in k country a lot, there's so much there that people don't realize. SM has such good skiing, too bad access is such a bitch.

Skied Nakiska just for shits yesterday. Lots of man made snow and only 1 run open from 1030-330. Oh and the lift broke for 15 minutes :/
Still managed to get plenty of speed runs in. I hope Fernie can do better in 2 weeks.
Pray to the snow gods!

Magical internet money for everyone!
Hit up Louise on saturday, was one of the best opening weekends I have had in my years of riding. Usually I expect a few weeks of wiwaxy 500, but they opened with ~50 runs, lots of stuff open backside and frontside. Lapped the 6 pack a bunch, lots of fresh to be found (knee deep) in places. Hiked boomerang and got some good snow. Rode paradise a few times and it was some of the best snow I have ever had in there.
No line ups anywhere, couldn't believe how empty it was.
Hopefully its a sign of good things to come for the season!
I was wrecked the next day and am feeling it again today, body is not in ski shape yet!

Went to sunshine on saturday and it was way better then expected. There were still a lot of bare spots on the steep hills and especially later in the day but enough runs were open to keep busy the whole day.
Sunshine card is 20% off today. not a bad deal.
Went to Sunshine Sunday and it was decent. Wawa was covered in the afternoon!

Looks like Revy is opening with downloads from the top of Revelation Gondola only. Hopefully It's not as crazy busy as last year as this could make for gong show
It will be worse... it's been trending that direction for a while now. I'm not even going to bother this year, not going there on holiday weekends. We looked over New Years a few weeks ago and there was no accommodation in town to be had
National Ski Day is back on Jan 14.
Lots of good deals around here - Nakiska - $38. Pano - $46. Castle - $42. Red - $44.50. Silver Star - $50. Whistler (beginner package) - $25.

Super cool article, its from earlier in 2016 but if you haven't read it yet it's worth a read:

Anyone join a club or anything like that this year? Now that I'm into the 3rd decade of life I'm feeling the time pressure to ride hard before my body becomes the limiting factor. Haven't ridden much in the last 10 years but want to get back into park riding.
I used to have a buddy who was a phenomenal rider and even though I always sucked he pushed me to always ride my best. Back then being good was to be able to pull corked 7s off the biggest jump COP could build (not me that's for sure but my buddy would pull them all day long). Now when I talk to people at work "good" is to be able to ride down double black diamonds. Doesn't really motivate me to ride hard....
Anyone find any clubs or groups into serious riding but aren't 13 years old??
I remember that article from swerve early in the year, really cool read.Originally posted by J-hop

As for getting back into park riding, there are always some good riders at Louise lapping when the big park is up. Easiest thing to do is chat with guys at the top, figure out speed, take it from there. There are always older guys late 20s into 30s riding park there.
