Default Autocross in Calgary! Aug. 7, 2016 - SASC YYC Event #1

***08/05/16 Update: Registration will be capped at 75 participants. A limit on registration has been introduced to ensure that we have a smooth, efficient, and safe day. No walk-up registration. More runs = everybody wins =)***.

    Read Me!
We thank everyone for the overwhelming amount of registrations, but we will not be accepting any late, walk-up registrations. All registrations must be done through msreg.com, prior to the deadline.

Due to the popularity of this event, we have noticed an increased number of newcomers and novices. If you are new to the sport, please do not hesitate to ask around, or pm me about any specifics. We encourage ride-alongs throughout the day, and are always willing to lend a hand with navigating through the track, sea of cones, etc.

In order to make this event possible, autocross requires equal effort from all participants.

The gist of a successful autocross operation involves the following:

    - All participants are required to work, and marshal immediately after completing all runs of their group - This involves marshaling for the next group, running to pick up cones, calling in cones, and watching vehicles for deviation of course, and other penalties.
    - Efficient marshal turnover is a must. Please do not lounge around in the pits or leave early if it is your turn to marshal.
    - In order to maximize the number of runs, everyone must be willing to put in the same amount of effort. Efficient turnovers = more runs for everyone =).

Autocross is finally back in Calgary! The SASC is holding the first YYC event of 2016 this upcoming Sunday, August 7th. Registration has now been made public. Please refer to the registration link for more information.

    II. Site Restrictions:

As motorsports enthusiasts, it is the goal of the club to not only host motorsports events, but to demonstrate that motorsports activities can be conducted in a responsible, sustainable manner that benefits the surrounding community, and participants everyday driving skills and behaviour. With this in mind, participants and attendees are reminded to be respectful of others, property and municipal ordinances, both on and off the event site. Racing, burning out, stunting, exceeding posted speed limits will not be tolerated.

No alcohol or drugs are allowed on site.

Washroom facilities: Port-a-potties will be available on site for participant use.

Any participant not exhibiting good behaviour both on site and off site will be asked to leave and banned from future events.

All spectators on-site must also sign the waiver.

III. YYC- Budget Airport Sound Policy:

In an effort to minimize our impact on surrounding residences, the SASC will strictly enforce a 93 dB sound limit at all YYC-Budget location events. Any vehicle exceeding 93 dB, measured at 50 feet, or showing excessive tire squealing, will be required to stop running.

If you know your car is too loud, please do not register until the proper modifications are made. We cannot stress this enough!

*****All participants were given an opportunity to evaluate their vehicle’s sound level at the Fort Macleod event on the weekend of April 23rd/24th, 2016. After this first event weekend, any vehicle in excess of the sound limit will not be allowed to run until adequate sound modifications are made.*****

Hype. I'd bring the mini out, but I'm helping my sister and her fiance move that day. I hope to see this continue.

Blue RX8. Sucks that I'll have to leave early, but I really want to show support/numbers for Calgary events. Any idea when the next one might be?

Note that the lot that we are running on is about 1000' x 440 ' ... so there is no looping/doubling back of the course and large sweepers ala SCCA National-style courses are possible on this lot. Parking, grid and pits are SEPARATE from the lot the course will be set up on. For autox, this is a large lot.

For Sunday, we will be running a slightly modified version of the 2016 Packwood (Seattle) National Tour course. This is what we have only dreamed of ... 'nuff said.

    See you Sunday!

    Hey Reijo,

Never been to an auto cross event, I was looking at the safety checklist and it asks for a safety harness, but also has a box for seat belts. if my seat belts are fine but I have no harness can I still sign up? Also is this event beginner friendly?

    Thanks

    Thanks
That box is for cars that have safety harnesses ... typcally full-on race cars (plus some others). If you have a street car with no such thing just mark N/A (not applcable).

There are a number of new people signed up and we will assign someone to work with you for a course walk and understanding some of the basics of how these events run.

The course is designed so you will not typically lose your way (recommend riding along with someone first to see it from inside a car ... maybe looks quite different and have an experienced person riding along for some tips etc. It is QUITE different than driving on the street and quite challenging at first so get all the hints you can and don't feel discouraged if you stink! ). We will help you as much as is possible in a day. This is really not an easy sport but that is also one of the aspects of the sport that makes it so endearing: It is challenging! It is one thing to get around the course but another to do it truly fast!

Note that the Calgary area has some very, very fast autoxers so if you have not done this before keep this in mind and do not be discouraged. There are people with very substantial experience internationally in Calgary ... with very good results from down south.

But, you know what that means? That you can learn a LOT locally about true high performance driving! It is an excellent, excellent opportunity!

Yes. August 20 is the next one. We have not opened up registration for it yet although most of the pieces are together etc.

    Stay tuned.

Reijo, is this being run like a practice session? Meaning lots of runs?

I'm in for aug 20th. I'm just worried about the Db.

A stock gt350R did 96 Db at Laguna seca during motortrend testing last week. Mine isn't the R but should be right around 92-94 Db. Hmm.

It will be like a regular autox for the most part but results are not official so I suppose like a practice.

However the big deal is that the lot is big (like the north lot in Red Deer in 2005 or before) and therefore without the course looping, we can send out cars more rapidly and still have a lengthy course ... and THAT is what translates into more runs. We can minimize the overlap.

SCCA Nationals sends out cars 20 seconds apart ... religiously. A single course can have 300 competitors and all have 3 runs each .... plus reruns means over 900 runs per course. That is attainable if we put our minds to it with a course like this.

Therefore with 50 entries, if we run just as efficiently, 900/50 = 18 runs each. Theoretically.
