    Default Airdrie...cons?

Pros are more house for the money, quieter than Calgary...

Need help. ..what are the cons? I work downtown and currently live in Evanston so commute wise it's 15-20 minutes longer each way. ..

All flat ground with no view or personality. More than half the town is built on extremely alkaline swamp that I use to spend my days 4x4ing in. Traffic on the corridors suck.

Figure out if if a train will fuck up your commute. it's a real factor for some neighborhoods.

From what coworkers tell me the commute is by far the worst part unless you work 6-2 or 10-7 or something like that. Deerfoot/QE2 has problems almost every other day as well, which can add lots of time. In the winter its even worse obviously. If you can use the ring road up there now maybe it's a bit better.

I recommend you actually try the commute yourself one day in both morning and evening rush hour (or whatever hours you work), as crappy as that will be.

The idea of spending 2-3 hours total every work day commuting has always been an issue for me. That is 20-30 days worth of full 24 hour days sitting in your car driving to/from work every single year. To me that is an enormous waste, but for some it's worth the trade for higher value housing. I would never trade a ~month of my life every year for a better house. Also extremely annoying if your friends (or kids/family's friends) are all in Calgary.

I've heard the worse weather argument. ..is it true? I mean I know they had the huge haul storm in 2014 but nothing recent? Do they get more snow?

How much higher are the property taxes?

I made this move just over a year ago from my condo in DT Calgary. GF and I live together and wouldn't fit in the condo.. So Airdrie it is.

    Cons:
    - The commute DT sucks balls.
    - If you're not driving at least 130km/h on the QE2, 10' off the bumper in front of you you'll likely become a roadblock. People are ignorant assholes on that stretch of road. Worse in the winter.
    - Its far, most of my friends are SW Calgary, I feel isolated due to this
    - Relating to the last point, you will put A LOT of miles on the car, i'm close to 42,000km since moving.

    Pro's:
    - Its actually a pretty nice little town
    - Tons of pathways and walkways
    - Everything you need is right there
    - Genesis center is reasonably priced and a wicked gym.

It took some getting used to, but I can see myself living here long term.

Good point. .our other option is to build again in Evanston and it seems like they are giving 2013 pricing!

Why is that your only other option? We live close to Evanston now (Kincora), and just started a build in Chestermere. There, you get the best of all worlds... though the taxes are even higher.

Truth right there except the long term part My brother in law did this and he would not shut up about how good airdrie was until he moved back to calgary after 2 years. He felt really isolated and the drive back and forth was a pain enough on a dry day so when a storm hits he pretty much calls in sick because hes looking at an easy 2 hour day of driving to and from DT.

Never understood people who choose to live out there. How little would you have to value your time to deal with the 2 hour roundtrip commute everyday? I think I'd rather move to Saskatchewan if I really wanted a bigger house.

Absolute shithole of a town, my gf grew up there, her whole family praised the place until one by one, they all moved back to calgary and couldn't believe they spent that much time commuting, dealing with crap weather, annoying peace officers, etc.

take a serious look at strathmore, pricing is WAY better than airdrie if you're building (pm me if you want an actual direct comparison between my house and my friend that just built). I used to commute and at any time of day, the commute is about 45 mins to DT going the speed limit.

it's growing like crazy, just outside of chestermere, there is east hills shopping centre which is 20 mins from Strathmore and it has everything you need from Walmart to sobeys to Canadian tire.

the downside is that the taxes are higher than calgary and you'll be spending more money on maintenance on your cars with all the commuting.

other than that, I'm glad I moved out here from calgary, ithe sucks to drive out there.

Whatever you do, do not consider moving to Cochrane........ because I love it here and there's too many damn people here already.
