Default Quattro vs 4Motion - winter car

Hey Beyond, so a friend is looking for a cheaper winter car that is AWD. They are now looking now at Audi A4 or Passat 4motion cars 1997 - 2000ish. Is there a big difference between the two AWD systems? 5 speed vs Auto?

Looking around there's a few B5 cars that can be had for under $4000 in decent shape. Is the V6 a better option to look for? Any help would be great!

this doesn't sound like a recipe for reliability.

Quattro is more 50-50 and 4Motion is more FWD-bias.

Quattro has Torsen diff while 4Motion has Haldex diff.

If excessive power isn't required, the 2.0 A4 is awesome.

There is one car standing out. It's an 97 A4 V6 5speed. For the money it seems like a good option.

Then Audi build the A3/Q3/TT off Golf and a haldex diff got branded Quattro.

both the passat and a4 of those years both have the same awd system (Torsen). The passat of that generation came with "quattro" as it is basically just a vw branded a4 with the badge 4motion on the back.

The newer pasts have true 4 motion which is haldex based. (fwd until it begins to slip)

Would a Subaru be a more reliable option? Kind of off topic, just curious as there are a few outbacks and imprezas in the same range.

This is the saddest question I think I've ever heard.

And the answer is even more depressing.

Its really more about if it was taken care of at that age range.

My USa4 gave me zero problems. I did regular maintenance. I only had to replace the ac compressor which I knew to be failing. It was an 05 with basically no kilometers.

I had an outback that I religiously maintained and put parts in. Ultimately, the head lifted. The car was virtually stock.

    You never really know.

I've had great luck with euro's. Its all down to how well taken care of the car was. General rule, if an older white couple owned it before you, it's a safe buy.

Yeah, sorry, didn't mean to insinuate that it was a dumb question or anything. It's just like being told that a Nigerian whore is gonna give you a cocktail of disease and asking "Well would a Somalian prostitute give me fewer STDs?"

The answer is probably "yes", but you're still better off reevaluating your options.

IIRC the Passat 4motions only came in auto in the V6. The 5 speed 1.8T 4motion only came in 2004. You could also get the 6 speed in the W8 which comes standard with 4motion.

As mentioned above the B5/B5.5 Passats had identical AWD systems to the A4.

Whatever you buy at that price range have it checked out and have a friend

Anything with Haldex is computer operated and primary front wheel drive until the front wheels start slipping. Its not 50 50.

Yup. I changed my controller to the HPA one to get a pseudo-50/50 split all time.

Quality winter tires should be added to the equation no matter what wheels power to the ground.
Hakka's or Blizzak I've owned and are great. Studs for even further traction but in my opinion not required for our climate. Would be great for the 4-6 days per year studs would actually out perform.

As far as platform, I would suggest a 2.0 A4 if you find one within the budget but the 1.8 is not terrible either. As mentioned, have it looked at to make sure there are no surprises ands it's been generally well looked after and not just thrown a can of "tune up in a can" down the oil filler... Lol is that shit even available still??

Honestly, I don't think it makes much of a difference in regards to getting going in the snow.

I loved my Quattro Audis, but at the end of the day, both systems are going to help you get going. As Boosted_TL said, winter tires are still a huge factor. Get winter tires with AWD and you're basically unstoppable.... regardless of what system the vehicle is running.

My M37x has the Attesa system. I honestly haven't researched the specifics, nor can I really comment as to whether it is better, worse, or equal to the Quattro. All I can say is that it gets me going - just like every other AWD I've been in.

Lol Restore. I was thinking about it but I don't hate myself.

    It's just an oil thickener.
