Was in Japan during the Christmas weeks, to my surprise, there is basically no "inflation" over there... (other than Toys)

Price for Hotel is good, same as 3 yr ago, or even 20 year ago! 4 of us, 2 rooms, (connecting rooms) just ~ $300-350 per room/night in Tokyo, ~ 220 ft per room, east of Tokyo station. (yes, you can book fancy hotels, east of Tokyo station, ~ $1,000 per night! )

We stay in the same Hotel group (Karaksa) in Osaka, Tokyo, and Kyoto, the one in Osaka was not impressed, perhaps way too many "Hongers" staying there, so service wasn't good! *_* but convenience location, near all toys store! (But cheap, was under $300 per night.)

The one in Kyoto is super super nice, 1,000 ft suite, close to 1,000 per night (but we only need one suite instead of two rooms), free beer and Sake!!

Food in Japan is ... still cheap!! 110 yen for a dozen of egg, ($1.1) 80-100 yen for most drinks from vendor machine, 800-900 yen Reman, 100 yen for a big radish, veggie, well, no more 50 yen sushi (some 60 yen) make me wonder why inflation is crazy here .. but not even in Japan! (Food and hotels are cheaper in Osaka than Tokyo/Kyoto)

Transportation is also reasonable, ~ 5,000 yen to rent a car for 12 hour, ~9,000 for a day, cheaper than in Canada! But toll fee is CRAZY!!! So avoid freeway if you are not in rush.

Shopping is still amazing .. most Japanese brands clothing are similar price as before, even Luxury brands are cheaper than Canada, (Will see long line up at every Rolex/LV)

If you like to see the Ocean / beach, can drive to Atami, or visit some lakes, and stay in some Lakeshore Hotels, I can do some recommendations

I'm planning my June trip to Tokyo now and I'm shocked at how cheap it is. Perhaps it's because my last few trips have all been to the USA which was not cheap at all.

But nice hotels in Shinjuku for less than a super8 in Canada. Top rated restaurants that cost less than 5 Guys. Cheap transit.
I can eat more hot wings than you.

10 hour flight says hi lol

JR Pass is nice if you need to go to other cities on return; if you do one-ways it's cheaper and only makes sense if you're flying to Kansai and returning home from Narita

Notice Singapore hawker prices also doubled in the last 6 months from the videos I saw. Sign for a dish went form $3 to $4 to $6.

Still similar dish in Calgary is $18, still hella cheap in Asia.

Still not expensive. We were just at a grocery store in Kutchan today and the only stuff more expensive than Canada was certain fruit, melons and strawberries in particular. Cheese was dirt cheap compared to Canada. Fucking dairy cartel.

That's pretty crazy (re: dairy) as I didn't think cheese was very prevalent in Japan. We do get screwed so bad in Canada.

What's been some favourite meals you've had so far?

Was a few years ago but I could go on for hours. Unagi-don and yakitori in Kyoto, Kobe wagyu in Himeji, ramen in Golden Gai, whale in Katsuura. In four weeks of travel I only had one single meal that wasn't top-notch.

Also, teriyaki chicken&egg sandwich with melon bun and Calpis from 7-11, GOAT travel-day meal.

Japan 7-11 is better than most fast food in North America.

Gotta be the sushi Otaru. I always specifically make a stop there, it's noticeably better than anywhere else. But yea all the food everywhere is great.

On Hokkaido the ramen is better and the Katsu curry is better.

It highly depends. Stay in Toyko, accommodation is a bit more. Heard a lot of gouging with hotel prices but $2K for a week in Shinjuku where I last stayed and seems pretty much the same now. It's a bit further and seedier but as long as you don't stay our past 2-3am it's way safer than Calgary downtown. [/b] Around Ginza is a bit higher class but costs more.

Train, just get a Suica card (digital wallet) and load it whenever you are out. If you stay for 2 weeks or more and want to experience Bullet Train, JR Pass is a cheap way to do that. JR Pass basically cost the same as 1 round trip + a week of local Tokyo JR train cost. If you can squeeze more destinations outside of Tokyo in that 2 weeks, then when saving starts. Otherwise, just stick with Suica because it's just easier than JR pass day to day use. And JR pass only cover the Yamanote loop. If you want to do subway, that's a different system and extra.

Food. Not sure about now but they were holding inflation pretty good up til the full opening. Ramen and fast food joints still have meals around $7-$10CAD. But budget it like you would be eating out in Calgary. Sushi has various price ranges. Beef is f'ing expensive. Pork and chicken are cheap and way tastier than anything in North America. 7-11 and Family Mart food is mostly edible if not great unlike here.

Unless you were blindly wondering into Kabukicho, what a bizarre take. One of the most Karen'esque suburban-sheltered travelling comments I've read on here. + reputation for not being B.Taylor.

I watch Paolo from Tokyo on youtube as he has some videos about various restaurants in Tokyo, I have saved some on my want to go list on google map as we are planning a layover there later this year.

best meal I had was probably a chu-toro and uni bowl at the old tsukiji fish market.

Worst food poisoning I've ever had was cheap sushi in a small town in Japan.

Don't forget to go for some Yakitori and Yakiniku. I recommend Torishiki for Yakitori, and Yakiniku Jumbo for Yakiniku.
