Here's the memory metrics with everything running at the same time.

There was about 14gb of processes running at the time I was doing user quick switch tests. Never above 50% memory pressure. It's clearly swapping, but it's doing it transparently I don't even notice it. Can clearly see it swapping while I was testing under Pages.

Does anyone have a reliably working Apple Carplay? Mine is a steaming pile. Mrs. Penguin's, not much better. Both are 2018 Nissan vehicles.
Have tried a ton of different cables, still, flakey A.F. Same cables can charge, transfer data from phone to computer without issue.
I cleaned the lighting connector on the phone under a microscope and cleaned the USB connector in the car. Even used deoxit. No help.
    Friggin annoying.
That sounds like a Nissan/Infinity symptom. I know an owner of a pretty new QX80, and it doesn't even include it.

    Works fantastic on my VW.

Does anybody else appreciate the fact that @rage2 's kids are doing QA at such an early age? haha

Isn't that the age when kids are first put to work in India?

I am now leaning towards the MBA because the touch bar seems to be very annoying.

I think that's when they start entering upper management, which makes a lot more sense now hahaha

I think that's a good call, re: MBA. I thought the touch bar was a stupid idea, but when I was considering looking to upgrade last year I went to go try touch bar at the Apple store and it didn't sway me at all. It's still a stupid idea.

I was going to comment that you know he has boys when their stress test are Minecraft and Roblox lol.

MBA 8GB seems to be the sweet spot for most users then. even for light imovie editing and PS, it might be more than enough.
hopefully more comparisons later on with 8GB vs 16GB

    Barely warm.

This is ridiculous. I memory tested the MBA with 8gb. I can't even feel it swap. Running 2 profiles, on mine Google chrome, 20 tabs of google sheets docs and slides, zoom. Switch to kids profile. Roblox, Roblox Studio, Minecraft running. Swap between 2 profiles instantly. 13 y/o stress testing Minecraft on it, he's blown away. Steady 60fps, how's everything loading so fast. He's laughing to himself at how quick this thing is.

Honestly, this feels faster than what the synthetic benchmarks suggests. We're both blown away. I don't even know if I want to keep the MBP M1 16gb. Fucking MBA M1 8gb is doing everything we need and more.

edit, finished the MBP M1 16gb iMovie test.

    MBA M1 8gb - 2m 44s
    MBP M1 16gb - 2m 33s
    MBP i5 16gb - 7m 8s

Heat update. MBA is hot on the bottom, warm on the keyboard side. I'm typing this on my i5 MBP and the fan is full tilt driving 2 external monitors and my google chrome shit and running even hotter haha.

edit - above MBA got hot after about 15 mins of Minecraft in the max settings. It throttled but kid didn't notice it at all. Still hovering in the 40-60fps range.

Tried the same on MBP, fan kicked on after around the same time. Continuing on the MBP, got Adobe CS installed, edited some photos in LR Classic, photoshop, zero issues. It's fast even tho it's running Rosetta 2. Installed steam, CS:go that isn't compatible or something. Doesn't run.

People have been complaining about Google Chrome ARM version crashing, no such experience here. Chrome does like to eat CPU tho, it's clearly not efficient at all.

Kid's in his room now stressing out the battery.
Was the MBP i5 driving 2 external monitors while running the test?

My fan goes nuts doing anything while driving 2 external monitors but its fine (well, better) when not connected to any monitors.

I have 2 MBP i5's here. The iMovie test was done on the kid's one. Those results are accurate.

The fan comment was in my office on my work MBP. Same i5 16gb model but yea, driving 2 4K/60 external monitors.

And yea, I think the MBA is the sweet spot. Hopefully by next year when my work upgrade cycle comes up, it'll support 2 external monitors. Still crossing my fingers they do a 12" version with M1. That would be the ultimate.

The dankest memes are made in MS paint. Don’t be silly.

$200 usd. A small price to pay for the dankest of memes.

Edit: FCP is $400 CAD by itself.

I honestly don't think so. I mean if you're doing Logic Pro or Final Cut working simultaneously on >8gb of assets, then maybe?

All I know is this workflow on a 8gb MBP i5 was terribly slow swapping.
I guess this ones debunked. The M1 mini with 8gb is killing it with Logic Pro.

It's pretty crazy, think I have to really look again at memory configurations with this new platform. I feel like I wasted money on a MBP with 16GB of memory.

If they can sort out dGPU support integrating with M1 2021 macs could be pretty exciting.

Killer config for me might be a base 16” mbp maybe with a ram bump, then I can sort out an eGPU dock to add some Graphics power and multi monitor support.

Even an iMac with eGPU could be pretty cool.

It’s unlikely that I need more processor than even base M1. A hair more GPU might be nice though.

So Costco had a good deal on AirPods Pro so I picked them up even though I didn't need them but man do I regret not buying them sooner! They are SO much better than the regular pods and noise canceling is freaking awesome and super effective. I used my BR600 gas powered blower to clear the snow yesterday and with noise canceling off I couldn't hear a lick of music. But with it on, it cut out almost 90%+ of the noise - that's freaking awesome. And the regular AirPods never fit me that nicely and these with the smallest ear piece fit perfectly.

@killramos that's what I'm trying to say, I almost think that it's better to spend money on SSD capacity than RAM bump. It seem 8gb enough for anything running actively. For whatever reason it's able to swap very quickly so there's a very minimal performance penalty to swapping, which is the complete opposite of what we've known in the last 30 years. Hell even in the last 5 years with fast SSDs, you felt the swapping.

My neighbor always laughs at me cuz I can't hear shit from him while we're clearing out the snow. Always thanks me when we take a break to chat for not cancelling him.

Snow blowing is my podcast time.

By ram bump I wasn’t considering anything more than 16GB. 500Gb SSD is pleanty for me which is essentially base 16” config.

Also a mini Led display would be just gravy haha. Even the dGPU is just me being a spec whore, I probably have no real need for any of it.

People throw things at me when I am wearing my AirPods in the office lol. Can’t hear shit.
