Default Anybody do the drive between Hope and cache Creek via TC1???

I'm heading from Chilliwack into Kamloops next week but will be towing a 24ft trailer that is roughly 4500lbs dry but will be loaded, so I expect it to be closer to 5300lbs? Anyway....I usually take the Coquihalla Highway but was told and from experience - towing will NOT be fun.

Soooo.....wondering if anyone has done the drive between Hope to Cache Creek into Kamloops via TC1??? It looks pretty tame compared to the Coquihalla but also much longer.

Are there a decent amount of gas stations on the stretch of TC1? I did look and it looks pretty scarce but when I made the map bigger I see a couple more stations like in Boston Bar. Also, what is the drive like or should i just take the Coquihalla???

    Thanks old timers.

The coq will test your truck/tranny/brakes. The cache creek route is reasonably tame, but there’s plenty of it that isn’t twinned so it might be a slow drive.

If you’re worried, go cache creek route.

I'll never tow down the Coquihalla again without upgraded brakes. I experienced extreme brake fade on it with my Chev 1/2 ton, towing similar weights as you. Was shitting my pants.

Yeah I'm def worried about that stuff - new brakes and new suspension over the last couple weeks, but still......i know it'll be a struggle for sure towing up and down the Coq - thanks for your feedback.

No worries re: the slow drive, I'm towing so i can't maniac it anyway

How about from Kelowna to Chillawack? Go down and take 97 to 3 to avoid the Coq?

TC1 as mentioned is a lot of 2 lane roads and can be slow. There is also a lot of twisty corners which you really need to be careful with because of stupid drivers. There are some hilly spots but nothing like taking the Coquihalla.

Highway 3 still has some hills and climbs and such but nothing like the Coquihalla.

The best route is obviously the Coquihalla but if it was me I would take TC1 even though you can almost double the time for the trip.

Are you (BokChoy) driving a half-ton truck, or larger?

I’ve done this drive. We used to have a cabin at Loon Lake. I engine brake down hills with the trans. You’ll be fine.

I’m making that same drive Sunday afternoon to do some tech support for family in Kamloops. If you make it there alive, beers on me.

You want to really shit you pants go Kamloops to Pemberton! That's all hills. Closest I ever came to wrecking, and that was with a 3/4 ton. Anyway, don't do that.

Tch slow twisty 2 lanes but less hill. Scenic too. Coq not that bad, just engine brake and go slow down. Lots of lanes so there's no pressure.

Sorry, I just realized you are talking about going W to E, going uphill is fine on the Coquihalla so long as you have a healthy engine. So many overloaded Dodge Rams on the side of the road whenever we do that trip, lol.

Here's the elevation profiles of all three you mentioned. Pick your poision, though I would do Coquihalla.

Earth Pro. It's not intuitive or convenient to use, but it's there.

Basically make a route, save it to your places, then somewhere in the mess of folders in "My Places" you'll see a little route symbol, right click on it and Elevation Profile is there. Super annoying because on normal Google Maps, the bicycle route just shows up naturally.

You don't even have to do that. In the search box just do a from and to and then "search" then right click the blue trip line and click elevation

Yeeeee. I'm driving a Tundra with 10,200lb towing capacity but my trailer is 4500lbs dry.

Thanks for this info; you def P. Eng. lololol.

I'm slowly going more and more towards Coq to be honest. I've done the drive from Castlegar into Kelowna through Osoyoos and I was able to do the hairpin turns with the Tundra and the same trailer and the drive into Kelowna from today from Highway 1 and 97A S wasn't too too bad. I've just gotta remember that though coq is 120, i'm not driving a car so focus on 100. While going uphills, just take it easy and not go hard trying to keep the speed up at 100+.
