Default POR-15 or Fluid Film. Anyone use this stuff?

Been reading other forums about preventing and maintaining under carriage rust.

These products often get brought up and I was wondering if anyone locally has used either and how it's been holding up. If you do use either products, where did you purchase it?

Want to get the jump on taking care of the underside of my car before more snow falls.

I believe these are two different products. POR-15 is a permanent coating and Fluid Film is an oil spray that you would have to reapply every year.

I POR-15'd my 4Runner during the summer and it was a huge amount of dirty work. Prep is everything so I spent an entire long weekend under the truck cleaning and wire brushing everything before painting on the POR-15. A tiny 1L pail of POR-15 was $60 from Cantire, but enough to do the entire frame. There might be a temperature limit to when you can apply this stuff, so I would do it sooner before it gets cold. You also need to paint over the POR-15 because it's not UV resistant, so it is alot of work.

Fluid Film and the other sprays (Rust Check) from a spray can is better than nothing, but IMO takes a proper setup to get it misted properly inside the frame. I was going to use boiled linseed oil and see how that holds up.

When I get a new car I will probably try fluid film. An engineer I work with swears by it and has used it for years on his toyota with great success. I believe cambodian tire stocks it also.

could also try corrosionx from RV shops, supposed to do the same thing, waterpoofingish... i have used it on electronics in RC trucks that see a lot of "puddles" (submarining) and it typically holds up well.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

Yep, totally diferent approaches to the problem.

I belive in the concept behind the once-a-season sprays, and I also think they are very unlikely to cause any negative effects.

I can see myself using fluid film, Krown or another similar product in the future.

I would use POR-15 on a frame-off restoration project though.
