I'm sure there are some in Calgary but here in Deadmonton we've come across two cafes that are loaded up with various boardgames and the staff know a lot of about all of them and will teach you.
Could be a fun afternoon and a way to demo a bunch of different games. That's how we ended up with Patchwork, a seemingly lame 2-player game that ended up being a blast. Boss Monster also which supports 4(?).

I find it to be one of the more convoluted games.
It's fairly straight forward IMO. Games seem to take about 30 min or so. I find it's actually a fairly shallow game, there are only a few strategies and you have to pick one pretty early.

Went to a friends, he had a bunch of games on "Jackbox.tv".... you log in with your phones and play on the TV, found it a lot of fun!
"Fibbage" was the game i remember playing anyways... there were a few that he had downloaded though

technically not a 'board game', but Heads Up, which is just an app for your ipad or iphone is super simple and lots of fun with friends. You pay as you 'expand' i.e. add more cards to the game when its gets a bit boring, still cheaper than a real board game and tons of fun and just dead simple
