The further north you are the less effective solar power is.

At the end of the day the technology is cool, but its still pretty pointless if it costs more than the power you are generating.
Maybe my google maps are broken, but to me Kamloops appears to be close to due west from here

maybe, oh I dunno 0.3741 degrees further south

I stand corrected. I always assumed that Kamloops was much further south.

Regardless. Generating solar power in a country where power prices are as cheap as they are is pretty pointless, unless of course you like getting power by burning money.

Also the argument of "getting away from oil" is ignorant since 98% of the power in BC is generated by hydro electric dams and biomass generators.

Lack of specific concern me. It's basically vaporware right now to ask investor more $ after he blew them on SolarCity instead of Model 3.

The concept is good but I don't think we are there yet. To make it look sexy, there probably is penalty on efficiency on something that highly inefficient anyway.

That said, NAIT is able to able to get 150kwh/month for the worst month (Nov) and 400kwh/month for best on a flat roof. If Tesla uses 40% cell that works like 20% cell in Nait's case, you are looking at $30/month saving in electricity bill in current rate and probably $60/month in the no coal + cabron tax world.

If you need a roof anyway (say $20K for a composite tile roof similar to what Tesla offers on your 3000 sqft house). You basically get pay on day 1 and forward.

Then the other problem is, do I trust a silicon start up to make the most critical part of a house's defense from the elements? Depreciation cycle isn't like an phone (yearly) or car (2-4 years) when if it sucks, you just get another one. It basically have to hold up for 30+ years for it to make $ sense.

we should all go solar. The "where you are and how much sunlight you get" is a lie, propaganda by the government. We all get the same amount of sunlight since the earth is flat.

I don't think anyone here thinks that Calgary is the target market at all. I think people are excited about the technology and want to find ways to make it work here.

And snow does matter. Much of the USA has to deal with as much snow, and sometimes more than what we get in Canada, so is Musk wants to make this available to as many people as possible, he will have to solve the problems that snow presents.

Nah, they invested tons of capital and manpower to make a product that only works around the equatorial regions of the US. Didn't you know?

I'm still quite interested in seeing if this materializes into something functional, long-lasting and (relatively) economical. Fun stuff.

Ditto. I hope it will be at a point where it would be a reasonable option when i have to replace my shingles in 10 years or so.

It works well until the hail storm comes. That video they put out with a snowball hitting a panel has not convinced me it's Alberta proof.

At Canada latitude its almost better to do siding instead of shingles.

I've got a west wall that gets full sun in the summer evenings, which also makes my house hot during that time. If electricity weren't so cheap, I'd solar panel it just to run the air conditioner. Between 6pm to 11pm are the only hours it's hot in my house.

They rate it at ANSI FM 4473 Class 3. What does that mean compared to the shingles we keep throwing up on our roof?

But it's definitely less than the Class 4 (I think) composite tiles I got years back.

If it's anything like Tesla parts for cars, I don't think I can wait for repairs if one of these solar panels are leaking.

As with most tests, it's weaksauce compared to the real world. Sure it might stop that single snowball without harm, but what about being completely bombarded with dozens of them per minute, like we see here on a fairly regularly basis.

If it were the same cost as standard shingles, no problem class 3 is good enough, but when it's 10x the money? I want to see it survive Skyview Ranch.

This product is for aspen... not skyview and everyone knows it doesn’t hail in aspen!

I would take anything from tsla with a grain of salt when it comes to shatter proofing objects though

To be fair if you were building new I think the concept is sound.

I’d like to see ALOT more people be guinea pigs before I would ever consider it though.

Wonder if the install comes with a NDA on hail repairs
