    Default XM Satellite Radio

Hey there, I understand XM radio is available in Canada now. (atleast that's what Autotemp Air and Sound says..they sell the units..) I was wondering what the reception is like in the Alberta/Vancouver area, does anyone know? Does anyone in Calgary use it, and wouldn't mind showing it off? Thanks!

It works very well, except for downtown. One of my friends has it in his truck. Of course, XM and Sirius are NOT legal for use in Canada, but since it's not stepping on any Liberal friendly companies toes, the government isn't doing anything about it .

Check out Audio Concepts. Last time I was in there, they were expecting a shipment in. I think they have installed a few as well, so they would know the reception quality.

A bunch of my friends have it, and i am i the middle of installing it. what rage said is correct, but what they have now is all they are getting. There is now a cease and disist(sp?) order and they can no longer import anything XM related. I know that Audio Concepts has a bunch of them right now, but they will not last long and there is no more coming.

XM has been in talks with the CRTC forever, but the biggest issues is 30% canadian content BS that has to be solved.

Not only is there a 30% canadian content issue, the CRTC also imposes limits on the number of "superstation" licenses in each market. Superstation is a station that plays more than 50% top 100 content IIRC.

It's a huge stream of revenue for CRTC, as each superstation in each market pays a huge licensing fee. Meaning if we DO get satellite radio in canada, I'm willing to bet that it'll be a washed out half assed service, much like our Satellite TV service here.

alright, so what is the process for someone in Canada to get XM...obviously you get the equipment, and install it. What about subscription, activation, and billing? You can email me a response too, if you'd like. Thanks!

you need a US mailing address (can be anything)
a .com email address (hotmail will work)
and a credit card for the billing

    thats it

and for equipment you will need a alpine XM ready deck, alpine XM box, and a XM antenna. or you can do a FM mod.

so how does one go about getting a US mailing account if we have no friends or family that would be willing to forward over your bills.

just get a valid mail address out of a car mag or anything. They bill your credit card, so they dont mail anything to you other then promotion crap. some company in the us just gets a little junk mail that they throw away no big deal.

Actually I beleive it is becoming legal now. Audio Concepts is getting in the new boxes soon, or might have them in now, they are made by XM themselves, unlike the old boxes which were made by Alpine. If you can find one of those, which I beleive Audio Concepts still has a few then grab it quick.

Talk to Jason at audio concepts. He'll fill you in on all of the details.
Werd, Jason at Audio Concepts is awesome... he will answer all the questions you might have regarding XM.
