I feel like this is why the VW Phaeton didn't pan out, because for that money people wanted Audi, MB, etc. This is just taking it one step further - for a similar price, people with that much money will buy a Bentley or Rolls before an extra special MB.
Ive seen 2 here in Vancouver.

Car was just shown for the first time in LA 4 weeks ago and there will only be 300 worldwide with 75 being in the US. Likely means Canada will only have a handful at best...
Maybe was this?

Well, that didn't work when they put Maybach brand head-to-head against Bentley or RR so they're hoping the Mercedes marque will give it the oomph.Originally posted by Mitsu3000gt

I think they have a shot, because VW to Audi/Merc realm is a big leap; Merc to Rolls/Bentley isn't that big IMO.
The problem is when you tell your friends you drive a MB, maybe you have an old C230 Kompressor. If you tell your friends you drive a Bently or a Rolls, it is far more impressive, regardless of what model it is. I feel like people with the kind of money to afford these cars want the recognition that comes with the more exotic brands, even though I highly suspect the MB is a much better car to live with day-to-day.Originally posted by flipstah

^Fair point. Although if someone talks about Bentley or Rolls Royce, it screams 'old money'.

I agree with you there. Maybe not as much Bentley, but when I think of a Rolls I think of an old pretentious British guy driving to his cigar club haha. That episode of family guy comes to mind:Originally posted by flipstah
