Question PS4 Pro worth the extra $$?

Looking at getting a PS4, do not need it right away so can wait for the best deal.

On black friday walmart will be having PS4 slim uncharted bundle for $330. Everywhere seems to have the PS4 Pro at a regular price for $500.

Is the extra cash worth it for the larger HD, faster PS4 and 4K? I've heard so much mixed info on this, I'd love to hear what Beyond thinks.

    Nope. At least, not yet.

4K + HDR has been problematic so far, lots of TV's doesn't seem to work well with the PS Pro, including Sony's own TVs which needed a firmware update just to get it going.

Realistically, you need 4x the power to get the same experience but at higher res, but the PS4 Pro is only double the power of the original PS4. So games will need to crank down the graphics settings just to get smooth 4K 60fps which is kinda counter intuitive. You could argue games will look better in 1080p but there's still minimal support at this time.

I personally don't think the PS4 Pro will be the killer console for 4K gaming, but it will be much better for 1080p gaming once more support comes down the pipe.

Shoppers had a killer deal over the weekend. Uncharted PS4 bundle for $379 + $100 gift card. And people were buying them with 15X points coupons getting $60 back in Optimum points. I'll keep waiting till PS4 gets a little cheaper.

Jeebus they dropped the price quick on the PS4 and Xbone S.

No one is buying? Glut of new consoles I guess. Not suprising, I'm still happy with my X360 and Seiki 720p to 1080p upscaling HDMI cable.

Does the new Playstation VR work ok with the current playstation or is it necessary to buy a Playstation pro?

This will not disown PS4, every game will guarantee to run on PS4. Pro will just give you better texture and stuff.

In theory, PS4 Pro should yield better VR. If you don't have one yet, PS4 Pro is not a bad investment.

Irony is Xbone S plays 4K BluRay. PS4 Pro doesn't.

It works fine with the existing PS4. PSVR is limited by resolution (1080p across both eyes) so there's only so much the PS4 Pro can do. Here's a good take on the differences:

Also, don't forget to get the wife to do the Kitchen PSVR demo. It's not as sexist as it sounds, and absolutely hilarious to watch haha.

Would a 4K VR experience be better? You bet.

Does it matter that it's shitty resolution? Not at all.

You might get PS3 level of resolution, but you certainly do not get PS3 level of graphics. The immersion factor easily trumps the lack of resolution so much so that you don't even notice it after a few minutes. Until Dawn feels like you're actually riding a roller coaster and shooting killer clowns. You feel like you're holding actual guns in The Heist. And you actually feel like you're batman in a batman suit looking in the mirror. It's pretty awesome.

I wasn't even concerned about the resolution, I was turned off by the amount of scenery detail, reflections, smoothness, etc. they cut out of the VR version.

That drive club side by side made me see things I can't unsee. That pop in...

I personally think it looks exactly like a GT5 Prologue game play video, maybe worse.

rage2, did you get the Playstation VR? Is it necessary to get the camera and those two wands, or is just the VR headset good enough?

Does anyone have it on sale today for cybermonday?

Nothing you can do about that given the consumer level pricing they have to adhere to.

To render 4K (2K per eye), you need 8 Teraflop.

PS4 Pro is coming in at 4 TFlops and Scorpion is rumored to come in at 5 TFlops. And we have yet to see a new affordable 4K display under 6".
It'll be at least another 5-6 years before good quality VR get to hands of general consumers, if it didn't die in the way of Kinect or 3D.

...until you play it. I watch screen caps that I've made from PSVR, and it looks completely stupid. Play it, and you don't notice any of that. DriveClub VR, even with a controller, is an awesome experience (once you get over the motion sickness).

You need at least the camera and the headset for it to work. I didn't think I'd use those move controllers, but yea, you need them for sure. It's hilarious how they look so stupid, but with a headset on and the image of them is replaced with say a medical scanner in Batman, how much it feels like holding a medical scanner and not a baton with a light bulb.

These things seems to be pretty stock limited (the launch bundle with the PSVR + camera + move controllers) so I doubt they'll be on sale. Finding stock is your big problem. You can buy all the pieces separately, but the bundle saves you $55. I haven't seen the individual pieces for sale this weekend.

    On the Topic of PSVR,

If you guys haven't heard the HMD works when plugged directly into your computer.
While there is no tracking, or SBS display, its only a matter of time before Dev solutions come into play, where the 240hz display may be put to better use.

I was thinking of upgrading to PS4 Pro to run PSVR for the higher frame rates, since almost every game makes me want to chuck cookies within 5 mins of play, the worst being COD Jackal Assault, 20 seconds into launching and i have to rip the HMD off before I spew.

I've tried a few titles With TriDef 3D on my computer, but my SLI 4GB GTX 960s can barely make 40 FPS on Fallout 4, which again leads to severe nausea. Oddly enough My GPU set up can run most PC games @ 4k with an average of 50 FPS with high-ultra settings. something about SLI and VR drop performance dramatically

I may look into upgrading to a GTX 1080, or Titan X-P if PSVR on PC becomes an actual thing.

So far the best VR experience has been SBS videos and Movies which are not GPU dependent.
Just wish there was a 4k resolution HMD, and the hardware along with the bandwidth to support full uncompressed bit rates, but as mentioned, that's a few years down the road.

PS4 Pro at the moment, feels more like a money grab then anything else, Even with some of the test game play that has been published for Mass effect Andromeda 4k, Its still not something a PC build for $200 more couldn't out power.

I didn't find framerates to be an issue with PSVR. The motion sickness comes into play for games where there's a huge disconnect between what you're seeing, and what your body is supposed to feel in terms of g-force. That's what I was talking about in terms of motion sickness. Your brain needs to recalibrate for the difference in expected vs actual g-forces.

Best example is Rush of Blood, where you ride a rollercoaster car through a bunch of levels. When it's moving slowly, your brain doesn't perceive the difference between forces, so no sickness. Get into some of the fast sections that mimic a real roller coaster, and that's when you wanna puke.

Driveclub, it's a puke fest until you're used to it. COD Jackal Assault isn't too bad, the sense of speed in space isn't as intense as Driveclub.

I don't even know how FPS games would work well with VR, the motion and force desync would be absolutely non stop. Probably worse than Driveclub as you're turning a whole lot more than driving on a track.

I suppose everyone has a different experience based on your ability to deal with motion sickness, I guess its safe to say sailors and pilots would find the least amount of discomfort.

I have noticed that when in game play, if I am sitting, and hold my head still its not so bad, but the moment I start to use the head tracking I just can't take it.

I mention Frame rates as being my crux, because I can see screen tearing and the frames rates drop during use, which in turn makes me feel like I've been drugged. Sometimes taking me out for hours at a time. I've contemplated selling it a few times because of this, but I guess I just need to keep easing into it.

You are probably right, different people definitely react differently to it. I've read that your body's center of gravity has something to do with it as well. The lower your COG, the more you are susceptible to VR sickness.

Interesting that you're seeing screen tears, I tried hard to notice it, moving my head at ridiculous speeds and didn't really notice it. Maybe I'm getting old and my eyesight is getting worse, but I used to be able to see DLP colors "tear" when moving my head, and had the worst DLP headaches.

I'll weigh in since I decided to give the PS4 pro a shot.

Side by side I didn't notice a huge difference till I played BF1. in operations 64 man the regular ps4 would suffer from lower frame rates when things got intense. The Ps4Pro i noticed not a single frame issue. 3 people tried it and we all did considerable better score wise on the PS4 Pro.

    HDR is also beautiful

Apparently the Last Guardian isn't quite playable on PS4. Its only smooth on Pro.
