Default Calgary Police Cars gets Daytime Running Lights

Who's the asshole that called this and questioned the cops? This was the easiest way to spot unmarked cop cars on the road, and now, it's gone. Thanks.

    Citizen questions police_

A citizen recently asked the police why the vehicles don't have a legal exemption allowing them to operate without daytime running lights.

Insp. Scott Boyd, who commands the Calgary Police Service's (CPS) education and training section, said they looked into it. The conclusion was that the police should apply for an exemption.

What's next, they won't be allowed to use cellphones and computers while driving? I thought they were trained for this shit to be exempt from the safety ramifications.

It's not gone. The police are applying for an exemption. I doubt the police will be issuing tickets to themselves during the waiting period. If they do, I'll name it Circle Jerk Ticketing™.

Why would anyone bother to call this in and complain? Seems obvious why the police vehicles don't have daytime running lights and we all appreciate it.

^ No they are just going to charge taxpayers to temporarily reenable the DRL's and then later bill us to install kill switches that they can use at their discretion. AKA all the time.

the cars already have a switch that disables DRLs, literally all they are going to do is leave the switch in the on position until they get the exemption

Did you read the article? They're going to tie the DRL to the ignition using OBD, and then install a physical kill switch, with a cost of $16k.

weird. my bad, I assumed that the solution was already how it worked. maybe just on the older crown vics.

Article mentions 400 need the mod and they have over 1000 vehichles so maybe just the new black cruisers need the change.

How moronic. Taxpayers wasting other taxpayers money to address a non-issue. Thanks "citizen"

Good to see all that money saved from the cancellation of the city Xmas tree recycle program has been put to good use. Let's get on those 400 illegal cop cars, a real danger to us all.

That article uses the word switch. As in one. As in $16000 each.

Is that right? How do we bid for this contract?

What's the bet - the contractor who upfits the cars, made the complaint...

Shouldn't we be upset at the person who approved the purchase of vehicles that were not compliant with the laws in place? I'm all for blaming the complainant as well, but someone got paid to mess it up in the first place.

Doesn't say total anywhere. And at 450 cars, that's less than $40 each.

So total seems small. If each seems us military type spending for $12,000 for a single hammer.

Likely the crown vics pre-date the requirement, and are grandfathered in as an exception. Considering it's likely just a bypass switch that goes to ground, it's likely costing $16k to switch all these vehicles over.

Read the quote again and figure out if it is per car or for all of them.

Boyd said the cost of installing the switch will be about $16,000 and the work should be done in a few months.
It costs $16,000 per switch and takes a few months to install one switch.

It costs $16,000 for all of the cars and it will take a few months to retrofit all of the cars.

I read it as deliberately misleading. Switch is singular, work is not.

$35.5 per car with OBD programming, a switch, and labour is never going to happen.

I bought a dashcam for $60. Did you see the ones in police cars? Probably over a grand each.

Ditto a switch. I buy them at the electronic store for $4. I bet the police version will be $40 alone.
