I'd think the non-requirement for daytime safety lights on an emergency vehicle would fall under a federal law. Someone, please let us know if the entire RCMP is in violation. I hope the military is not without these lights. We need to drop a cool thirty million on this issue.

Someone, please think of the children.

$35.5 per car with OBD programming, a switch, and labour is never going to happen.

I bought a dashcam for $60. Did you see the ones in police cars? Probably over a grand each.

Ditto a switch. I buy them at the electronic store for $4. I bet the police version will be $40 alone.
So which is more realistic to install a simple switch in 450 cars. $16,000 or $7.2 mm?

I can't believe this is up for debate. Clearly they aren't going to be spending 16g EACH CAR to retrofit.

    Holy.

    Really?!

$35 a car is just as ridiculous knowing this city.

A street light should not have cost a million$.
Changing lights should not cost $700,000 on a bridge that should not have cost $30 million.

Enableing the DRLs on anything Ford or Chevy past 2005 is just a matter of changing a setting through the diag tester, takes all of 5 mins per vehicle. There is a specific option to select "Enforcement" or "Blackout" lighting options

Bullshit Rick, clearly the City is trying to make you think they spent 7 million on this so no one is looking for it later in the budget and they can go blow it on hookers and swimming pools for all the Sergeants houses.

This is why government spending never makes sense to me, and I always look at their figures with extreme skepticism.

Inflated costs to cover other things like, legal fees for internal domestic complaints...

IIRC correctly, one of the Cops on here argued with me about this a few years back and they claimed they didn't have to have DRL's and were already exempt, so what changed besides someone formally asking the question? And no, it wasn't me that asked...

Ok I'm missing something here and can't figure it out. Why do they need the ability to black themselves out? I thought ppl only had those switches to a) get AWAY from the cops, or b) are astronomers and need to run/move the car without ruining everyone's night vision.

You want a blacked out car any time you need to get into a position without lighting up the neighborhood (a quick example would be reports of vehicle entries and you want to try and roll up on the suspects without them seeing headlights from 5 blocks away) or times where you need to get into position near a house without lighting up the street, etc. Maybe you received a call where somebody heard what sounded like somebody being beaten and with the echos of the sounds at night they don't know what house it's happening at. That's a perfect time to enter the neighborhood in darkness and try to pinpoint the sound before steps get taken to cover up the offence and potentially hide a victim. You'd be shocked if you knew how many people love to beat their significant others behind closed doors. There are also traffic duties where cars can be parked in darkness near roadways, etc.
Or simply put, terminology used by another beyonder, perfect for a steak-out

So, you guys are telling me you honestly believe the $35 per car quote?

And it wont be a simple switch, they already have one. Fundamentally there is no difference, unless it's electronic and defaults back to on after a preset amount of time, or when ignition is reset or something.

$16000 for 450 cars is dreaming.

    Why?

I come to a client and throw out I need 450 vehicles that need a simple quick job. Lowest bidder gets the contract.

You think shop rate translates like that? No client assumes they're staff is good enough to get it done.

You think they order 450 switches at your 4$ price? haha. no.

My understanding is the DRL is also disabled in order to instal wig wag headlights (alternating headlights).
And I agree with the earlier statement-lack of DRL was a tell for CPS vehicles.
