Default Dumb Question about gmail app in iOS..

Okay so this is dumb but I can't find the answer,

Basically I want to turn PREVIEWS of emails OFF on the lock screen, for the gmail app.

But i still want to know if there's an email received.

Is there anyway to turn off previews?

Or is it that it either shows on lock screen or doesn't show altogether?

I don't want my emails to be easily read by my coworkers, or anyone really.

    plz help

    I'll start.

So what you're really saying is; being shiny isn't good enough for you and you want to become an advanced user... I don't think Apple thought this one through.

Actually the stock apple app lets you do just that and very easily easily including on an account by account basis.

Sounds like its an issue with the Google app not being at all customizable

It isn't some kind of special little android snowflake feature.

OP try going to Notifications in settings, click on Gmail and see if there is a toggle for "Show Previews", might be one more level down inside the accounts themselves. In there you can also just prevent Gmail notifications from showing up in the lock screen period if that's what you want ( which it sounds like its not )

Aside from that you will have to check through the settings for the Gmail app itself, can't help you there as I don't use the app.

Fcking gmail app is the problem.

Yea kudos to Googles for dumping an industry standard push email system to how to go with their own proprietary system that doesn't play nicely with any other email client, I had gmail push grandfathered for so long until I replaced my iPhone and had to go with IMAP again...

That formula sure does sound familiar Annoying, right?

Back on topic though, is Google Inbox available on iOS? That might have additional options. I don't use Inbox though so I am not sure.

To be fair, GMail didn't dump it. It's only available for paid accounts, and they got rid of it for free ones.

I use the native iOS mail with push for my Gmail. It works exceptionally well, even for search (as long as its within the last month). I can even turn off previews with the native app. The only time I fire up the Gmail app is when I have to search for some obscure email > 30 days.

    click for larger version

Also who pays for gmail unless you are using it as part of a larger domain solution

To me that's the worst part, they are still perfectly capable of providing the once free service. They just don't any more.

Still don't care enough to switch to iCloud though. If something is terribly time sensitive i just have it emailed to my work exchange account.
