Default Wheel locks worth it in Calgary?

If you have a decent set of aftermarket wheels, how important do you think wheel locks are?

Looking at new lug nuts for the new wheels and wondering if I should make sure to get a locking set. Also, any recommendations for lug nuts? Worth going big for something like Project Kics?

I would use them on aftermarket wheels for sure. I always end up with them on OEM wheels also and I find it more of a hassle than anything.

No recommendation on which ones to use though!

Where is your vehicle usually located on this map during the evenings?

Not even a question. Cheap insurance for your wheels.

Wheel locks on my summers and winters for all my cars.

Just gotta remember to hide the key somewhere in the vehicle.

On my r33gtr I machined a longer set of locking nuts that I center drilled and made a threaded flush plug. I drilled and tapped a small metric machine screw thread into the stud itself. Even if a would be thief did manage to find a key that fit, it would strip the locking face before they ever figured out that the stud was screwed to the nut.

It was a lot of work. But at the time my wheels and tires were worth the effort.

I have had goodluck with muteki blacks.

On the map in rich people and business land.

Sounds like a no brainer so far though.

First off they make easily accessible tools to remove lockable lug nuts, hell you can hammer a standard socket on if you want.

Second, is wheel theft off the car really a big concern in Calgary?

My vehicles aren't parked outside for long so no need for wheel locks. Too much hassle dealing with lost or stripped keys.

This is why I thought I'd post up here. Although economy in Calgary is worsening, I feel like identifying a good set of wheels is still more of a savvy crime then not. A wheel lock probably stops the more desperate guy just looking for a quick buck.

I park in my garage every night and in a fairly nice parkade with security cameras everywhere while downtown. I am very rarely if ever parked in an open parking lot or on the street, and never over night.

If I was going to get some splinedrive nuts, which require the tool to install. Given the circumstances, would that be probably safe enough? I know anyone can get a spline tool, but most people can get the more generic wheel lock keys as well.

It seems in these times you are better off getting a catalytic converter lock of some sort

Have never had them with any of my cars. Then again, I don't park in stupid places.

Earlier this year I had someone steal all the lug nuts...but not the brand new 20s with brand new tires off a Denali. Weird as fuck, all four wheels fell off when we went to move it because nobody noticed haha.

sounds to me like someone just wanted to fuck with you and damage the truck, not actually steal anything.

Door locks are useful in keeping out thieves that go around jiggling locks till they find one open, whereas to steal wheels you would be looking at a thief that already is bringing tools with them and very likely have the ability to remove a locking nut as well.

Not to mention I’d call the cops if I saw anyone doing a wholesale swap of all 4 wheels on jack stands or bricks in a parking lot…. Little different then hopping into someone car and digging through the glove box. One looks like something normal an owner would be doing in their own car. How often does someone remove all 4 wheels in a random public parking lot?
