Default Free 2017 Parks Canada Discovery Pass

Thought I would spread the wealth of getting a free Discovery Pass for 2017.
    http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/voyage-travel/admission.aspx

Website traffic volume is high so be aware that you will have to come back to order it.

    You're welcome.

I don't get it. If admission is free for everyone, why do I need a pass?

So you can post it on ebay and see who falls for it?
I was wondering the same thing.

So not only is it free to use the park and no income to maintain the park when it's going to be at an all time high, now there's nothing to cover the cost of printing the pass?!?

Probably strictly for logistics to help determine demographics and usage of the facilities.
Same reason businesses offer "club cards". Gives them data.
As far as I know you can pick up a pass whenever you enter through a park booth.

Doesn't really make any sense since they don't take any ID or information from you when you buy a pass any other year.

So they wouldn't be getting any data from people who bought a pass in 2016.

If you don't have a pass you'd still have to pay the day admission prices I believe.

How else will they ticket people who don't have a pass. Got to make a buck somehow.

Or predicting how understaffed they will be.

There is no way the parks are ready if the load on ordering site is any indication.

I suspect they will be gaining revenue overall by simply placing radar vans throughout the park and nailing those who can't drive 90.

The fines levied for not having a pass (in normal years) is what's called "voluntary compliance". In other words...there's nothing they can do if you refuse to buy a pass and refuse to pay the resulting ticket.

I bet they still get a reasonable compliance rate. I know a lot of people that wouldn't know it was voluntary and would just default to paying it.

they will be implementing closed roads and busing strategies. Im so not looking forward to all the unnecessary traffic chaos this will bring specifically parking issues in both Banff and Lake Louise area where we have a parking shortfall already. pretty stupid to offer the crown jewel of the National park system for free. when we already get 4 milllion per year and 2 million plus come from july and august alone.

^^ Yes we'll be staying far away from the national parks this year. July and August will be a shit show in Banff. I'm sure the businesses will benefit from the increase in visitors though.
    Feel sorry for the locals.

Thanks for posting the direct link, huge help! I was trying to find it this morning but all the Gov websites say (we'll allow ordering later on so&so site due to high demand).

I'm assuming the line-ups to get in to national parks, especially Banff will be massive. Having the pass early will be nice to fly through the gates without having to line up!

To confirm, you can also display a 2016 pass without needing the 2017 pass?

My fear is that people like myself who go hiking and to banff regularly are going to skip the parks altogether in 2017 because it's going to be a gong show for the entire year like if Costco started letting everyone in...

I don't think, I'm going to call Parks Canada when I get a minute. I have been running my April 16 pass all summer and this fall/winter and I've received 9 warnings on my dash at the ski hill. I obviously don't want to buy another pass just for 1 month so I need to get this figured out.
