We'll I'm very jealous haha. That is more what I expected, but it turned out to be a huge ordeal. I assumed one guy would come and do everything, but they use one department for the home install, one department for the conduit fishing, an entirely separate third party company to do the drop, and none of them talk to each other lol.

I will update on Saturday...hopefully from my new fiber connection.
Back when I got mine, it was one dude who took it from the overhead poles in the alley right to my modem in my house.

Got my Fiber up and running today, finally. The techs were 10/10, super friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I had to do all the in-home stuff and help them fish the cable but that's to be expected these days and was super easy. Got the terminal in the house which was nice. All 3 speed test websites showing about 960 Mbps symmetrical.

Grabbed an Asus RT-AX88U as well which seems to be running well, I can still get ~300 Mbps or so all the way out in my yard/garage and the router is in the basement.

Not looking forward to my call with Shaw haha - that's all I have left to do. Contract is up in July anyway so cancellation fees will be minimal.

Up until this point though, my experience has only reminded me of this::

Yeah talked to Shaw and they won't budge on their price of $95 for 300, so fuck em once I get my email account moved, I'll order up telus fiber, $85 for gigabit up and down is too hard to pass up. I just hope those fuckheads don't take forever to install it like they did at my buddies store in Edmonton.

Glad you finally got it installed. It took Telus 3 weeks to install it for my parents in December. Same deal had to run it from the pole to the garage then under ground in an older neighborhood. My dad told them that and they still sent out the wrong people (twice I think), then the PVR died the next day after it was all installed so they had to come back one more time (4 total).

My 2 year is up with Shaw @ the end of June so I'm probably going to switch just not looking forward to the install.

I called in and after waiting 35 minutes for the 15 minute call back they only have one TV package now "Total" so my bill would jump to $209+GHT from $167 tax in for 600/SM TV/Phone.

He gave me a number for the sales people who deal with the 2 year contracts but I'm not holding my breath....

EDIT: First Shaw lady put me on hold then hung up on me... second guy offered me 600/"Total" TV/Phone for $154+GHT.

It's going to hard to decide if having to deal Telus support/installers will be worth the 1G down/up!

Where are you guys finding gigabit for 85 dollars?

I took a look on my account and the jump from my 300 to gigabit was 70 to 145

That's it, new customers only, fuck the loyal customers.

As far as FTTH installs, ours was pulled in, up and running in under an hour - all aerial and PVR never has hiccuped in the several years we've had FTTH.

I'd happily take Telus FTTH, but they don't offer it in my hood

Haha fair enough. I am still very confident in my choice to keep 300 to save the 15 dollars.

This may be an unpopular opinion but based on the router stats I have collected over 3 years I have never saturated the 300 I pay for as it is. Gigabit would be purely bragging rights for me.

Then again, you could make the same argument for cars and top speed.

I think now that the weather is better and virus concerns are subsiding, you won't have to wait as long as I did. Just make sure they are putting the right notes in their system as each piece of the install gets done, as there are 2-3 separate departments that do it and if things get out of order, you might be waiting a while.

Totally worth it though, it's just objectively so much better than anything else and it's cheaper than my Shaw 600/20 by a couple bucks a month. I got $200 bill credit but I signed up in February, so I am not sure if that is still a thing.

Perhaps the most shocking thing about this whole process is when I called Shaw to cancel, after being a customer for ~15 years, they didn't even so much as ask why I was canceling, and they did not transfer me to retentions (that part I thought was mandatory). They couldn't care less that I was canceling and it was a 5 min phone call tops.

It's genius marketing. Sell higher top speeds that they know 95% of users can't every use, and your competitor can't match.

It works too. My boss just told me the other day he got Shaw 600 so now his "computer will be way faster" haha. Pretty sure he's never downloaded a single file in his life. Most people do not understand that bandwidth does not equal faster for day-to-day tasks, provided it wasn't the bottleneck to begin with. People like to see numbers, and 1000 is better than 600 so they're all over it.

For me personally I have lots of huge uploads and downloads, and I am most excited about how fast I can upload stuff now.

Might be coming soon, I drove through the older part of my neighborhood today and they were trenching fiber everywhere.
