I got Monday off, but I expect stores to be open, as I need to get some shit done, and need B&E Electronics to be open, which they are. Work IT, so technically I am always on call, but had a solid week without a peep off, so was nice.

Any idea if a store like Staples would be open tomorrow?? I was hoping to drop off one of my parents old TV's at electronic recycling.

^^^ pretty sure they will be. i think the only time a retail store is closed is x-mas day or unless it's some mom/pop shop

Was a weird year for our office we got both Friday and Monday off for New Years. No clue why but not complaining, we only got 1 day in previous years.

Like Dave pointed out, with NY falling on a Sunday, office folks that are normally open Monday to Friday (like us) technically aren't entitled to anything extra. I could have pulled the staff in today for a normal work day but that would seem like a bit of a dick move. If a stat falls on a weekend I still give them the extra day (with pay).

Dealership world, so working today. We were closed Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.

Roads were very quiet today and its dead as hell as expected.

Because 2017 sucks for long weekends this year, we're getting 2 extra days off to make up. They're closing Canada Day and August Long Weekend.

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

This extra day was in lieu of Christmas falling on a Sunday.

The general rules of the holiday pay in Alberta

-If you are normally scheduled to work and don't because of the holiday you get paid an average working day (which is your average working day over the previous 9 weeks).

-If you are normally scheduled to work and do work on the holiday you get paid an average working day plus 1.5x rate for hours worked that day OR pay an average work day plus a vacation day that also pays an average work day.

-If you are not normally scheduled to work and do work on the holiday you get paid 1.5x rate for hours worked but do not receive an average working day on top of that.

-If you are not normally scheduled to work and don't work on the holiday you don't get anything (or at least you aren't entitled to anything).

There are exceptions and other pay structures for people and certain jobs (sales, farmers, etc.) but most would fall under the above.

I'm surprised there aren't more employers who aren't aware of this. I talk to so many people (both employers and employees) that think you get a day of pay for a stat, regardless of what day it falls on.

My DIL works for TransCanada...she didn't work Christmas, nor Boxing day, and gets no money for those days!!
Damn even TCPL tightened up that hard hey?

I was never aware of not having to pay if normally not under work until this year. As a few people in our office said the sig others weren't getting it (most EPCMs who are cutting budget everywhere possible). Naturally all the Engineers had to dig through on the internet for a debate.

CNRL honored them for a family member, and surprisingly Stantec OnG gave them Friday in lieu of New Years.

Most Oil companies I have worked for in the past always gave a carry over stat, keep the employees happy I guess? How times have changed

no one other than restaurants, grocery stores and the bars are open in Strathmore today pretty much. it's annoying. sometimes I hate living here due to hours of operation of everything.

Not only that, this year's Christmas party was "no spouses" and because she's on contract she had to pay for her own ticket.

We only got boxing day off (We also worked on Remembrance day).
It's been very slow today and I'm fighting a nap.

What you mean you need a day off? I gave you a job, isn't that enough?

Oh you broke your leg? Your still coming in right?

Isn't this the norm for contractors though? Thought only employees were entitled to be paid for holidays?

Restaurant wise, I only expect Japanese taking the day off. If a Japanese restaurant open for new years, it's probably not ran by Japanese.

    Everyone else should open.
