Millennial starts at '84 according to the video. AFAIK it starts at '00??
But yes, hyper saturation in digital environments is unhealthy. Dave experienced this first hand a few years ago, and again more recently.
I don't think the issue is limited to millenials, just that they haven't known the world to be any different. Any generation can get addicted to social media.
I think the biggest lesson to be taught is:
reject consumerism; kill your TV; study philosophy
Depending on the source, the definition of Millennials is ridiculously big. I've seen some that include what we know as Gen Y into the same fold as millennials.Originally posted by born2workoncars

Being a lead of a team of 14 people with a wide range of ages I can see a lot of what is said in my staff and it can be quite a challenge.

It's funny cause it would be Dave's (generation's) "failed parenting strategies" that are the cause of all this...
Being that I spent my youth being basically raised for the summer every year by my grandparents I found that I don't really mesh well with my peers in the workplace. They do drive me nuts, and I find myself relating more to my older superiors, which is what I contribute my early success to.
But because of that my 20s aged me mentally far too quickly and it's almost like I've become more of a millennial because of it? Well, at least the millennial dream. Probably not so much the reality haha... oh well, life should be about balance, old school work ethic mixed with some sort of enjoyment and a touch of "yolo" mentality

This woman (Krystal McCann) from Canada's Worst Driver season 12 is the epitome of a millennial - my wife and I were continually amazed that someone could be so self entitled.
As a parent of four millennials, I have to say my kids are by no means typical millennials but I don't have to look far to see typical millennials - parenting has played a very large part in how these young adults developed into what they are.

I find it comical that older generations call the millennials impatient and the instant gratification generation. Ever heard an old fart at Denny's on a Sunday morning? They are about the most impatient people I've ever heard!!!
The reality is every generation strives for faster return and faster gratification. Just because the next generation is better at it doesn't make their goals any different in life. Not sure why people don't get that.....
I'll agree with that statement. Wide variance of parenting though with my generation. I would venture to guess that Speedog and myself parent similarly. But we were often chastised by friends that my wife and I were "too strict" with our boys when raising them. I never held off with spankings. My oldest boy never had a TV in his room, and his first big purchase of a mountain bike was with his own money that he made from a paper route. He was 12. As his hockey coach, he was not unfamiliar with being benched or cut if he wasn't good enough on the ice. And as I brought him up golfing, he was taught to look adults in the eye when speaking to them, respectfully and clearly, and shake their hands firmly at the end of a round.Originally posted by ercchry

My youngest son was raised differently. (Albeit, being special needs posed different challenges) but I'm sad to see that his whole day can be spent in the basement playing his PS4 and watching YouTube all day long. He's quite happy doing that, even if it's a beautiful day outside.
My sister however is my total opposite. She is raising her kids and has never spanked them once. They will hit her, punch and slap her, punch and slap each other, scream at the top of their lungs if they don't get their way...basically two little hellions. All their clothes have been purchased at Baby Gap from birth, and every Christmas or Birthday, thousands of dollars are spent on each one, even at the 1st and 2nd birthday.
I'll accept that!Originally posted by Sugarphreak
I see both as being equally bad morally... Let's say a -2 on the ol' moral compass. So more of a moral misdeminer really, easily outweighed by the good things you do

The difference is this generation seems to have an unbelievable high rate of suicides and people who can't handle the "real world" and need to be medicated, and receive stress leave, etc, etc. We see 10 year olds committing suicide because no one is understanding their need to be accepted as LBGT, or whatever the hell they want to be called.Originally posted by J-hop

Jesus, when I was 10 the only thing I stressed about was getting out of the house on Saturday morning by 9:00 and not coming home 'til it was dark so we could play ball all day long.
Eventually we'll find a happy medium. I agree we've swung way too far "left", but at the same time I know guys from the older generation who have no problem dropping an N-bomb still and don't comprehend basic biology. That is definitely not a culture we want to go back to IMO.
I think the millenials also suffer from a mass of information. In your generation things were simple, you had limited information about the world beyond the people you physically interacted with throughout the day. The new generation is bombarded with information from the get go and they are forced to develop into individuals with a million different paths in front of them. Where as you probably had a very narrow (not meant as an insult) range of paths you could see going forward.
I do feel bad for this generation. They are being brought up by a generation who by no fault of their own necessarily aren't equipped to help them navigate properly.
Is this actually a trend? Or did it happen one time and now feels like an "unbelievable high rate"?Originally posted by C_Dave45

I have no idea what type of parent I will be.The thought of it is scary. I'll probably just let my gf take care of it. She was born in 91 but has this ASian tiger mom approach to things apparently lolOriginally posted by Darkane

Dunno the actual stat. All I know is I hear about kids that age committing suicide because of their need to be accepted as being transgendered etc, etc. It happens so often that every school and health care organization feel it needs to address the issue and have "safe places" and "non gender" bathrooms for these little flowers.Originally posted by born2workoncars

I didn't know of ONE suicide of kids my age when I was growing up. I've known quite a few in the past 10 years. Not to mention the countless victims in the media.
Christ, go take a leak in the bush if you have to pee. I don't care if you need to drop trou and hang the rat, or squat like female dog. Requiring that businesses and school spend millions of dollars upgrading their washroom and changerooms just seems such a waste of money.
My little nephews now get report cards, and the A,B,C, C- is gone. They get "numbers" (whatever the hell that means). And does anyone "fail" a grade anymore? When I was a kid if you got a D, your were an idiot and had to repeat the grade. Some more than twice!!. But I'm a cranky old fart, so what do I know?
