Received my assessment for a townhouse in Evegreen, assessment was down but property tax went up, $22/month more, weird.

Well, your dollar will be worth less next year, so you're still saving!

This year highlighted just how great the "Alberta advantage" is.

So my official assessment from my BC property is $14xx because I am a dirty foreign owner lol. What surprised me is that if I was a local I would pay $6xx. If i was a local senior, i would pay $3xx... for property tax on a property worth 280k, assessed very generously at 225k <- another big shout out of thx to the BC government for assessing properties by the provincial government and not letting cities pull assessed values out of their ass and then collect tax based on bullshit numbers like happens in alberta (Looking at you Edmonton who assessed my house over 20% above what I just paid for it).

As for my Alberta properties, their assessed value is way over what market would be for them, and a rebate on property tax here for being a local is about as non existent as a pulled pork sandwich is in Saudi Arabia.

So much for the cost of living being cheaper in Alberta.

Yea but gaurunteed you would spend more throughout the year on PST than you do in Alberta on the additional property tax.

It's all about optics I guess, we pay less than half the sales tax of BC and half or less than any other province in Canada. I spend a lot of time in BC in the summer and I always pack in as much as possible as it's so expensive to buy anything there. I gladly pay the higher property tax here. dollars in my pocket at the end of the year are all that matters.

It completely depends. Food is far cheaper there if you eat out. Gas is more. Getting something repaired is far cheaper for mechanical, plumbing, hvac, etc. Clothes should cost more. I find cars are cheaper and are obviously in better condition, although if you are a local paying gst on a used private sale car is horseshit. There is less wear and tear on cars too so that translates in to they are cheaper to own. Wages are definitely less in BC. BC has far more rebates however.

Just on the tax difference for myself to lose out on the PST vs what i'd save on taxes, i'd need to spend about 40g on goods and services a year to have the tax savings canceled out, which I do not do.

IMO the Alberta advantage is horseshit except for one thing, and that is wages. If you're in a job that pays more than other provinces, you're likely winning, but there is no winning on services, tax, or anything else. it all pretty much is a wash without factoring in wages.
