I'm going to hope and guess that prices drop towards the fall for rental cars, if they're still out to lunch all winter long then I'll just uber everywhere

Looks like Turo prices are still very reasonable for Waikiki. My 1 min search says I can get a G-wagon on Turo for only ~20% more than a SUV at Dollars

Hey, anyone know how it works in Hawaii when you go fishing and catch a big fish? Like can you bring the meat home like when you go salmon fishing in BC? Is that allowed when crossing international border?

Are you looking at shore fishing? I did a bit of that in Maui a couple years back. No license needed for salt water shore fishing, but you just have to make sure and stay out of nature preserves etc. I caught a few smaller jacks and bone fish with light tackle, but only did catch and release as I had read there was toxins in larger fish to worry about. I dunno if its still a thing. Still had fun.

I'll find out next month. No idea how it works but I'm going on a fishing charter out of Maui April 18th.

My parents just came back from HI yesterday and my dad brought some fish he caught. CBSA guy asked them what was in the cooler when they arrived, they told him, he waved them through.

    Hey All,

Heading to Oahu in August and looks like car rental is still roughly $2500 for a couple of weeks. Have anyone used Turo and how was the experience? Price seems like half the cost compared to the rental.

    TIA.

I was just on Maui, rented this M3 Competition from Turo. The guy dropped it off at our VRBO and picked it up there as well, easy process and first time using Turo.

Just remember to bring your own puke bags if you have kids and rent something fun.

My dad has used it and he loves it. I have a trip coming up in Kauai and using Turo as well, so I haven't actually tried the service yet, but as far as cost and ease of processing, it's great so far. You have direct communication with the owner, you can add extras (baby seat, coolers, beach chairs, towels etc.), and arrange for the owner(s) to drop the car off and you can leave it at your hotel/airport for them to pick up. I rented a midsize sedan for 10 days for about $1000 with drop off included.

How far in advance did you need to book the Turo?

As bad as rental cars these days?

I believe you can even book a day before if you like. But you get discounts for advance bookings.

The owner of the car sets the rates, it's not an algorithm like uber or something like that. Think of Turo like a VRBO in regards to availability, pricing and selection.

When I used it, I punched in my dates which started the following morning and the available cars and price were populated. It's very straightforward, go to the site and have a look.

Man prices have really gone up for car rentals. When I went it was like $30 USD/day for an SUV.

    Huh? Lol

I booked a 7 passenger suburban for this year and the price was no different than any other year.

What kind of SUV are you booking for $30 a day? Lol

I’m paying $221/day all taxes in.

Find me a full size 7 passenger suburban for less and I’ll book it.

I would assume that Hawaii car rental locations have the same issues as lower 48 and Canada, which is a lack of new car deliveries, overall fleet shortages, and a lack of staff. If you think Hawaii is crazy, look at Calgary even. Lot of locations are totally sold out for any price.
