I just had a look at the Turo site and it seems like there is quite the selection. Just super nervous that if you book it and the owner changes his mind you are shit out of luck.

Yeah we used to rent SUV from Dollar/Thrifty for ~$35USD/day in Oahu. Cheap. The last couple times were Ford Explorer with the 3rd row seating. It was nice. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
We just booked Oahu for December last night. Looking forward to it!

We usually book our rental car through discount Hawaii car rental, for our January trip I had originally booked a rental which had a total cost of $1050, which was bonkers in comparison to previous trips for a full size.
Continued to check randomly and eventually got a booking for $540 for same size/dates.
Would recommend checking sporadically if only jacked up prices are available.
Is this part of a helicopter tour? Or can you just go check it out? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Drive your way up and pay the park fee (though I only remember paying it 1/2 times). You prob wanna be up there 2h before sunset... otherwise you park a bit lower and it's a long hike up, then hiking down in the dark. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Sunrise you can pre-book a parking spot, I've never tried that though.
Also be prepared for it to be very very windy.

Just got back from Maui and used Turo for my vehicle, I rented a ridgeline from Guillermo C. and the experience was fantastic. They took my flight number and tracked it to ensure when we would arrive and they were waiting just outside in the parking lot for us with a clean vehicle and fully disinfected. We then did a quick 5 minute walk through of the vehicle making sure there was no issues/damage and off we went. There are some Turo experiences where they just receive the vehicle after a family has used it for a week. The cost was half of what the rental companies were charging.
For return all I had to do was take pictures of the vehicle and they met me in the lot and took the keys back. Much better than the whole rental car check in process.

Wear warmer clothes.
Go early as they have a cutoff now, for capacity.
Photo I took from one year.

I did Haleakala sunset, but learned it was more often cloudy at sunset than sunrise.
If you can drag your ass out of bed early enough, apparently sunrise is the way to go.
+1 for bringing warm clothes, it's cold as balls up there.
You are above the cloud line haha, that’s what makes it so epic. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

I should be more specific I guess. If you go in the morning, you can see the sun cross the horizon, as opposed to the cloud line.

Yes I saw, what is the cancellation policy of the owner?
Are they obligated to the dates you reserve?

True, but it’s a pain in the ass waking up at like 5am and fumbling your way in the dark amongst a million tourists trying to find a good spot, haha.

Only one car, no backups, hope nothing happens to car or owner before booking date.
I guess you could gamble and book when you arrive.

I had my Turo booking cancelled 2 weeks out due to maintenance reasons. Owner didn't offer any of their other 5 cars and just cancelled the booking. I ended up going with National.
Turo needs insurance on top as well. Not sure how credit card coverage works with it. Hawaii is shutting down airport delivery of Turo cars citing it is illegal to do business on airport grounds without a permit.
I don't think I'll try Turo again after my experience.
