Pfft. We get more snow in summer.

Is there a reason why they're avoiding the use of 4x4?
4x4 on dry pavement is bad for the diff, which is what calgary roads are most of the time.
Sometimes 4x4 is shift on the fly so it takes time to get into 4x4 and by that time your out of the icy patch. Or its hard to engage while moving.
Hi4 can only go to a recommended certain speed. My toyota is recommended at max speed of 80km/hr says the manual.
Also, some trucks and SUV are not 4x4 and just RWD. This is pretty common.

Foothills industrial is just all sorts of special atmOriginally posted by relyt92
This is my 3rd winter on my WS70's, first two winters with RWD this one with AWD. I expect my next set will be studded tires as well. Driving through the foothills industrial area is nearly impossible even with the AWD.

Some pretty ridiculous ice out there right now, was better before they plowed
Incorrect. 4x4 on dry roads won't hurt anything but your turning radius is going to suffer.Originally posted by That.Guy.S30

4x4 with a locked center differential is a no-no at high speeds. In theory if your front wheels have the exact diameter as the rears and you were on a smooth surface, then it's fine. In reality, there's always just enough minute differences such that both wheels will never actually turn at exactly the same speed. That puts extra loading on the differentials because it's physically trying to push the wheels to turn at the same speed but they can't actually do that. The higher the speed, the more the loading.Originally posted by firebane

Half ton gm with auto 4wd is the tits. Perfectly fine at speed and no problems getting moving.
Word. Other than deerfoot everything was so shiny this morning.Originally posted by J-D

I'm still trying to decide if the next 3-5 days of above zero weather will help or make all of this worse at this point...

What is with people and lanes? Most lane markings are now visible but instead people are just driving all over the road still.
Way worse this morning coming from the South. Ice + most people on all seasons, the light would turn green and 2 cars go through, then another 3-5 min wait. It's supposed to be warm enough in the coming days I think it will be OK. The salt usually keeps the roads from re-freezing unless it gets extremely cold again.
I'm not sure why they even plow some roads - packed snow is WAY better than the icy ruts that get left behind the crappy plow jobs.
Probably worse, as the lows aren't high enough to keep melting snow overnight. Major roads will get better since the brine solution will be able to be utilized, but side roads will get worse.Originally posted by killramos

Roads were overall great yesterday evening/this morning. Some seriously sketchy bumpy bits on Macleod heading towards the stampede grounds though.

Depends on the 4WD system involved. On my Jeep, there is no difference in fuel usage between 2WD and 4FT because all parts of the 4WD system spin regardless of what mode you are in, all that changes is the power split.Originally posted by 01RedDX
Also, fuel economy is much lower with 4x4 engaged, at any speed.
