In any given year, Calgary gets combined WEEKS of where major roads (like bus routes) are hard packed snow/ice. This includes most intersections where they are polished to a shine. THIS is where studs win out every time.

The tradeoff from optimal road conditions is negligible for the average driver. I drive a 15 year old Civic and have no issues with noise with the radio off.

I honestly think it must depend entirely where in the city you were driving. Some areas were insanely slick and pure ice. I've already listed out the shit show on Glenmore Friday AM. Then around 6pm there was another ~5 car crash that night under crowchild except going westbound that same night.

Aspen had some spots that were pretty icy, mainly going downhill on 85th, have to approach intersections real slow. Bow trail going to the Flames game on NYE was brutal in some spots, you could not see a single lane line from aspen to 3rd ST SE. Some major ice in areas, people going very slow and turning 4/3 lanes into 2.
After the game/downtown festivities I drove down to Mahogany via mcleod/southland. Several intersections you would see people sliding and the traction would kick off. Mahogany traffic circles you have to go so slow cause its just polished ice. Coming home at about noon the next day several cars were parked on the shoulder with blow tires/accidents from Mahog to Aspen. Whether they hit something or burst from cold all season, not sure.

But either way the road conditions the last few days have been some of the worst I've experienced in YYC. I definitely could slide sideways taking a left intersection turn if going just a bit too quick, lots of flashing TCS going up hill on 69th street and other areas. Foothills industrial is brutal. All this is coming from a Golf R with brand new Xice3 tires.
Civic SI on my street must have all seasons because he could barely get out of the cul de sac this weekend, all I could hear was spinning tires waxing the street and v-tec yoooo

On my second set of studded winters now, and I've found that for Calgary roads if you're gonna rock studded winters, you need another separate set of winters for all the clear road days so you can cycle back and forth.

I take the studded winters off when it looks like there will be a week or more of clear roads.

Wife reports that while roads are mostly clear she still runs into a bunch of super iced up streets on her commute so I'll probably keep them on for a while longer (and because lazy).

Whelp, we used to argue how winter tires weren't worth it, and all-seasons are fine. Now we're arguing about whether studs are worth it, and just winters are fine.

We'll never all agree on anything, but this is progress

So, two sets of winters, one studded and one studless, plus true summers, plus probably some all-seasons for spring and fall. That should do it.

Also some AT's for when you might have to take a gravel road, and some MT's for crossing a creek.

I was going to say that I'm not taking my minivan off road, but I recall that the vehicle I took furthest and most often off road was a Pontiac Sunfire. That thing was a beast.

I got stressed just reading this. Already struggling to find space with 8 sets of wheels, and finding time to change over wheels on 3 vehicles every spring/fall. I can’t even imagine

Hey is the winter driving course running this year at ghost?

I'm having way too much fun in the rav on all summers (ok all weathers but they suck) - finally figured out that point of slip from the front bias, and it's so easy to 4 wheel drift and dialing in to the short wheelbase again (it's been a while, I'm used to 200"+ wheelbase vehicles).

That said what was with drivers today, I caught 3 major accidents in front of me today.

Three vehicles? Lol you need eight different vehicles for each of the conditions mentioned.

No, TransAlta (who apparently owns the access ramp and reservoir) informed them they would no longer be permitted on the ice. No reason was given as far as I know, but they are trying to find a new location.

This new de icer spray that they are using in Edmonton is really good. Seems like the snow just melts on impact and it never really gets that icy on the roads. It just causes your vehicle to be dirty pretty much all of the time.

What track would Beyonders go to? And like 99% of the people on here have ever been to Castrol

    @reijo ?
See in the usual Events and Meets section.

1st SASC Winter school is this coming Sunday, Jan. 14 ... at the Budget/YYC lot where we run in the summer.

Heated porta-pottie, hotel next door, restaurants nearby no drifts to speak of ... lots of positives.
