Poll kind of doesn't apply to my situation because I've been self employed for over ten years now but my current line of work is stupid busy. I would say I've had less than three weeks of down time in the past three years and the amount of work coming is even crazier than what I've already dealing with. Good position to be in I suppose.
    Will fuck off, again.

I am just about to take a job in DT Calgary for the summer, lol

I wasn't planning on it, but my goal is just to make as much bank as possible in the next 4 months to try and fund my ongoing schooling. I kind of get the feeling that Vancouver is not the place to do that, most companies immediately ignore me the second I mention the time period.

Gotta find a nice furnished apartment downtown now, surprisingly there is not a lot on AirBnB
Doing your old job or trying to work in something more along the lines of what you do in school?

Going to be so tough getting your hours for the designation once you are done with all this.

There’s about 40 billion rental units available for you. There’s some new fully furnished units right on 17th ave now - the George.

A couple groups in Canada were still visibly heavy on staff. Although the rumor I heard was that it was mostly OKC staff being laid off.
Sold all "conventional" assets to CNRL 4 years ago. Kept essentially only heavy oil.
Had lunch with a couple of the survivors Friday. They are retreating alot of the Canadian positions into the ivory tower in OKC. Was told almost all accounting/finance will be done out of OKC with minimal staff left in the Calgary group. last week they found out if they were going immediately, q3 or staying.

I don't get that. So you're told you're done in Q3. No incentive to really show up much. Just blow through health care spending account and holiday time.

you'd think so, but surprisingly in my experience most people are professional about it. this is standard procedure at the company i work for.

Well the incentive is getting your package. You don't want to jeopardize that.

They also hope people leave before Q3 to reduce the severance paid. Most people are now in job search mode for sure.

Been with this Energy company since July 2006. Contract was supposed to be 6 months long starting in Fort Mac but I have been with them for 12 years! On July 3, 2018 I got a mail from contracting (middle man) firm after work that client is terminating my contract. I also got a voicemail as I was away from my phone. Contracting firm told me not to go into work on Wednesday. I went in at 6am as usual and no one was there. At 7:20am I spoke to our manager as our lead was not in. Had a nice conversation with her and noted that it's a continual process to trim. She took over the role as manager from our previous manager who retired about a month ago. On our team there are 4 of us beside our lead. Two of my colleagues work with SAP Flocs/Equipments/BOMs. Another colleague work with MDG UC2 and UC3. I am the only person in the group who work with engineers, vendors, manufacturers and SCM to set up spare parts in SAP, request for quotes and info etc.

Anyways in the free agent market making contacts with peers and other folks on Linked In and social media. Background include 4GL programming, query languages, SAP ABAP, SAP HR configuration. Experience with SAP HR, MM, PM, and EHS. Functional experience with Master Data Governance. Researching to see what is in more in demand out there.

Not much news on this, only story I could find:
    https://globalnews.ca/news/4331316/c...loses-sources/
500 people out of work and a whole bunch of wholesalers owed huge amounts apparently.
I remember them being 2-3 trucks way back when.

From what I understand from someone in the know it sounds like they had a few really bad estimators that under estimated a handful of really big jobs (in the millions) that they were awarded. "A bad estimator can sink a company". Very unfortunate.

I heard something similar, a hospital job somewhere and the number 3 million. They also had the siemens hvac line all wrapped up and apparently they did something to lose that a few years back.
A couple of suppliers said the writing had been on the wall there for the last 6 months, they weren't even bothering filling the orders that cam down from them, because the terms were getting stretched out to 90-120 days if at all.
