The reality is, it is a sinking ship.

Given our current political climate, Canada, let alone Alberta, are no longer economical places to do business.
With Trump essentially saying "LETS DO THIS!!!" We will see more investment leave Canada and shift to other markets leaving us in the dust.

I hate to say it, but all the environmentalist nut swingers have won.
Until we see a fundamental change in attitude and political spectrum, this will be the new norm.

We bitch and moan when foreign companies buy our natural resources (remember Nexen and Talisman?) Why wouldn't we cheer when those same multinationals sell them back to us?

I know we're all pretty depressed about the political situation in this province and country, but let's have some perspective.

As the old guys at CNRL always told me, "the assets will end up in the hands of the lowest cost operator over time". Seems to be true for these two blockbuster transactions.

Look at the published cost per barrel of various SAGD projects. Several of the CVE projects are right at the low end of that scale. That makes them "low cost" to me.

What metric do you guys use to say that they aren't?

interesting comparing this vs. the Shell/CNRL deal.

With the Shell/CNRL deal, Shell stock dropped while CNRL went up indicating that CNRL got a good deal.

But with this one it's the opposite, makes it seem like Cenovus overpaid.

It's difficult to comment on the stock movements...

Albertans have a feeling "things will get better" when there's a political shift, and when the price of oil goes up.

The "international" stock traders look at this differently. They know our federal government has a hate on for oil, and all the other environmental jazz (carbon tax, etc...).

International owners of the stock would look at this as if they purchased assets in an environment that's going down the drain, where one day the asset might be worth little to no value.

I'm not saying I'm right 100%, but I do think this plays in to factor with everything.

Depends on how much of the stock is owned by local vs international.

Also stock will be performing better for companies that have assets abroad, stocks will be lower and performing worse for those companies who's assets are focused on a specific region, especially Alberta (because of how shitty it is here, risky risky risky).

There's probably a million other reasons to, but this is just what comes to mind.

Well Cenovus is issuing close to 400 million shares (~200 to Conoco and ~200 to the market) for this deal. That's 50% more shares than now.
The bought deal was also at $16.

CNRL hasn't announced any share issue yet.

Cenovus is horribly over staffed and inefficient but Conoco was a whole different level of stupidity. They start meetings off with "safety moments" regardless of who is attending, have moderators (as mentioned above) and had 3-5 staff vs 1 at a comparable company before layoffs and even now I would says it's 2 to 1.
