Suncor just filed for a megaproject to potentially start early 2020s.Originally posted by cjblair
War or not, we won't see another mega project in Alberta. No board of directors is willing to saddle that much risk (i.e. the huge captial spend that's required) anymore. Therefore, my view is the future of the EPC/Construction industry (as it pertains to oilsands) here is in debottlenecking/maintenance/turnaround work. We're not going to see another Fort Hills (for e.g.) that comes up from scratch.
Just like shale, it will become a new technology game for future thermals.

Electromagnetic heating? Whoa! Instead of SAGD, it's EAGD?
Is Firebag complete now?

I'd be happy to be proven wrong.
Shell ran some EM heating test in the peace river area. I think they called that a "technical success" but it was never economic. But as electricity, natural gas and oil prices fluctuate, it could be in the future.

Solar panel that shit. PSSSYKE JK.
NSolv also had their pilot plant up in the McKay area, using solvent based extraction. I believe their trial run just ended.Originally posted by ExtraSlow

See Crank. See Crank Walk. Walk Crank Walk.
How does the solvent extraction work? Chemical reaction to separate the bitumen?... Then it oozes out together, then separate it again?
Nope. Think SAGD, but with a different S, which leads to less water and less energy to heat the water.Originally posted by flipstah

I was part of a project with Athabasca a few years back where they were using electric heaters to heat up a formation.
250m long electric heater in a well bore with a producer well directly below it.
Not sure how its going now...was mostly producing water the last time I checked. But it has been a few years.

Somewhat interesting; hopefully it means more opportunities for some that are currently unemployed.

It means more jobs for guys with muddy boots, not more office jobs.

I think the office has become leaner than ever.
Not a lot of administrative/professional openings and the ones that are require 10+ years experience.
Devon with another big round of layoffs yesterday and today.
Stated 300 between US and Canada. I think Canada taking the brunt of it.
Devon seems to have laid off a shitload of people. They sell off most of their assets in Canada?

A couple groups in Canada were still visibly heavy on staff. Although the rumor I heard was that it was mostly OKC staff being laid off. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
