backpacks for check-in luggage

How big is too big for a backpack to be still considered a check-in luggage? Is 88L too extreme that it will be considered as oversize luggage and be charged extra fees accordingly?

I've flown internationally with a 60L that was pretty full and it was on the edge of being unacceptable as carry on as it just barely fit in the overhead bins.
I'd say 88l will be fine if checked and your under the weight limit

The airline you're flying with should have maximum dimensions and weight limits on their website before it's considered oversize.

88 Will probably be too big. I travel with a Marmot 32 and thats usually just big enough.

I've taken a 50L as a carry-on and it was fine.

Usually it's 30" for length and 23 kg. So not sure how stringent they are when it comes to checked-in backpack that are over 30"?

32L for backpacking and as your main luggage????? Did you just bring a towel and a toothbrush?

Airline makes a difference. I flew KLM to Amsterdam and their limit was 18kg for business class, 12kg for economy

me and the wife travelled for a month with 45L bags. I don't think I could travel with more again

88L is too big, I've seen most travelers pickup their 60L+ backpacks at the baggage carousel.

I fly with a 45L backpack and wife with a Osprey Ozone 46L for 2-3 week trips with no problem.

Haha yup. I did 2 weeks in portugal and another to Japan. My travel style is a little erratic and backpacker style so being light and maneuverable is key.

When your mid 20s you can travel light. Especially so when you dont need formal/semi-formal wear.

I have an Osprey Farpoint 55 (Phenomenal pack btw), and it definitely fits without the buddy pack, and would fit regardless if they didn't measure and hold you to precise dimensions. Lots of research I did on the pack included people successfully carrying it on in various configurations. On top of that, if you get denied, it has a flap that zips over the back straps and it turns into a checked bag in an instant. Highly recommend, and lifetime warranty. Good size for 1-3 weeks as well.

The plan is to go to Thailand and PI for 6 wks total. The last time I went to those places, I had a luggage. As a matter a fact, all my past trips have been luggages. I've never backpacked before so that's why I'm trying to figure out a reasonable size pack. I do have an Arcteryx Altra 35L and an Arcteryx Axios 50L already but I find the 50L too small? I have an Osprey Xenith 88 coming tomorrow but you guys said that's too big. I missed out on a very good deal on an Arcteryx Altra 65 and 75 few weeks ago

How about a 65-75? I guess it depends on what contents I'll be packing

A lot depends on how fat the bag is. Long and skinny is prob ok, but short and fat will cause issues. If clothes/soft items than can be squished then perhaps (but still prob not 88L) .

You cant just ask about a max VOLUME size as the physical size is more important.

Differences also happen with aircraft/airlines. A Q400 has tiny OH bins but sometimes you have sky check service available with certain airlines. I haven't flown a 787 yet but I would assume they have larger OH bins than older aircraft.

Ah yes, complete reading fail (saw discussion about over head bins). However, a Volumetric number still isnt a size to go by for checked bags. You need 3D dimensions and weight to consider.

what do you usually bring with you when travelling?

I can fit the following in my 45L backpack
- pair of pants
- pair of shorts
- swimming shorts
- 2 pair of socks
- 3-5 shirts
- 3 underwears
- sweater
- tripod
- camera accessories
- laptop
- toiletry
- sandals

did this for a 3 weeks trip in Asia last year and was still able to buy some small memorabilias

Depends what you are doing. If you are bringing your own dive gear..etc it will take up quite a lot of the bag.

I also have a Osprey 55+15 bag and find it great for 3-4 weeks of travel with fins and a mask.

In the past, 7 shirts, 7 shorts/pants, lots of boxers, lots of socks lol. Guess I'm used to packing my whole closet when I go on vacation.

I guess I'll be doing laundry a lot more often on a backpacking trip
