    Default Let's Talk About Deadbolts

    Quick Poll; See options

I think the options are fairly straightforward
Curious as to the popularity of keypad/keyless.

rocking one of these myself: https://www.amazon.ca/Schlage-BE365-...ronic+Deadbolt
I recommend it over the motorized ones as the battery lasts significantly longer and I'm sure the bolt is in place as I can feel it.

I've been thinking about getting that exact one.
i'm a total noob though - are they easy to install? also, can I re-key it to my existing keys? I only want to do the front door, not the back, and dont want to introduce another key to my house (understanding I'll almost never use it, but still).

I have one of the wiser motorized ones on the garage, and honestly, this schlage one looks better. When it's really cold out, that motor really struggles to throw the bolt.

Install should be pretty simple, it was a few years ago, but I don't recall any issues.

Not rekeyable from the user end AFAIK, maybe by a locksmith.
I had thought it was easy to install too, but it wasn't the case.

My old deadbolt was a Weiser. The hole for that was 1 1/2". The Schlage one is 2 1/8". Both holes are standard size and a Weiser would be able to cover the 2 1/8" hole no problem.

Anyways the point of the story is I had to get someone to come and drill the hole bigger as I didn't want to mess up the alignment; $100 for some guy off kijiji. You may luck out and find that you already have a 2 1/8" hole there? It's on sale now at Rona for $117.

Why are you waiting for a Yale lock on a shitty Nest platform when Schlage has one that does everything today and works on multiple platforms?

Until Google takes Nest seriously, or sells it off to SOMEONE who will take it seriously, it's the shittiest platform for home automation crap, even compared to the newcomers in the marketplace. Hell, even Vivint's hack job of an automation platform is better than Nest's.

Mostly cause I already have a few of the nest devices, but you're right, there's absolutely no reason to wait for that if there are better alternatives. Time to do some more research.

Was thinking a lot more beyond ballers were all over automation and bluetooth/wifi locks.

I guess true ballers don't care and just have standard locks since it's only the butler that has to lock/unlock the doors?

Not having to carry any key is a big plus for me, it's just so convenient.
It feels so archaic having to use a key to unlock the door to the office sometimes when I get there early. Not to mention that I have to walk back to the car to grab the key.
Installation of the Schlage Sense is pretty simple. Homekit works fine. It kinda defeats the purpose that you have to unlock your phone first for siri to unlock for you. I may as well tap unlock myself. Other than that, no complain so far and it's been almost a year.

Yea, it's so someone can't take your phone and rob your house. Garage doors fall into the same category.

It's a little nicer with the latest iOS, just present your fingerprint when Siri asks. Not sure if that's allowed under distracted driver laws though.

I have two of those set up at my place. The one that gets used the most has been set up for 3 years and still haven't changed the battery on it.

I have 2 Weiser key pad locks at home, the one on my garage is a pain in the ass as the 4 AA Batteries have died 4 times since August.. while the one on my house (batteries inside) are till on the originals.

If anyone is looking at the August locks, I believe I have two at home Id sell heavily discounted. My parents bought them, had issues, had them replaced and didnt bother installing again. Id do $200 each... thats $100 off retail for brand new never installed locks.

Anyone know the difference between Weiser Powerbolt 2 and Smartcode other than appearance?

That's pretty much using Schlage Sense and Apple Homekit. Ask it to unlock the door, it uses fingerprint on your phone to unlock. When Iris scanning comes out whenever, use that to unlock as well.

It's too bad you hate Apple haha.

If I'm going to reach into my pocket though, I may as well just pull out a set of keys. I'd rather a scanner at the door, or even better (one day I'm sure) a finger print scanner on the handle itself, with instant unlock.

OR... going out of the box
Invent some sort of lock that uses a proximity sensor, which you can program to the same fob as your push start car

There are locks that are bluetooth (Weiser Kevo), and unlock as you get near it with your phone or separate fob, but security is an issue if you lost them.

Also apparently they suck right now, and only unlock half the time, and sometimes unlock on their own, lol.
