Default New dryer cord too short...

My mother in law bought a new stackable washer/dryer combo that was slightly bigger then her last set.

As a result the dryer cord no longer reaches the plug.

    So do I...

    1. Move the plug by splicing a cable to the existing and moving the plug higher to reach the cord.

    2. Re-wire the dryer with a longer cord (possible warranty issues)

    3. Build an extension cord for the existing cord. (possible code issues)

    Only good if it's a old-school 3-pronger. Anything built after mid 90's is 4-prong.

Move her into a condo that has a plug that will work but option 1

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

I don't see OP being allowed to modify the electrical wiring in a condo by himself, if at all. I believe if he was allowed, he'd be required to have the splice located inside a box as well.

Canadian Tire sells the cords you need to do #2, which would be my first choice. Keep the original cord and if you do have a warranty issue, swap the old one back.

If you don't want to do #2, I would do #3. You'd need a few feet of the appropriate wire, a box, male & female plugs.

#3 would be easiest, however I am worried about code issues.

I can't find anything in the 2015 CEC.

Any resident sparkys wanna chime in ?

If she only needs to do laundry once a week. Can she just plug/unplug the extension at each use? "Temporary"

#2 is best, easiest and safest.
Usually when you open up the back of dryer it's easy to rewire a longer cord. The cord is expensive unfortuantely due to gauge size.

#3 is a terrible option and I would say for sure not to code.

#1 Moving the plug. I think you mean move the outlet on the wall. Could do. You'll need a junction box to do this properly.

edit: I am not an electrician.

i dont see why a dryer extension cord would be any different than any other type of extension cord as far as code goes...

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

Yeah #2 is the plan. Hopefully will be done Saturday morning.

I am having hand surgery Friday afternoon so my son will be electrician for a day.

About 40 bux approx. for a new cord. Way cheaper then moving / extending the receptacle.

Wouldn't really be a big issue to move the receptacle either. Get marrettes big enough for the splice and tape them up really good too. Throw a blank cover plate on the first box and that is your JB. Cut a hole in the drywall directly above the current one, screw a box in and install new receptacle.

or if the wires come from the top it'd be easier, just pull the wires up and put a blank plate or move the box and drywall it up.... but really the extension cord or replacing the cord on the appliance is definitely the easiest fix
