Default Legality of rear bumper guards covering plate when parking??

so there's this product that protects your rear bumper when you're parking:

If your license plate is on the bumper, this bumper guard will cover it.

Question: is it okay to cover your bumper license plate when parking, if the bumper guard can be lifted up manually (a parking inspector or cop can lift up the bumper guard to see license plate?)?

Obviously this guard will defeat those automated license plate scanners, but the license plate can still be checked manually. I know you can't legally cover a license plate when the car is driving, but what if it's parked?

    Thanks.

For a car to be on any public highway (which includes roads), it needs to be registered, insured, with plates on it regardless if it's driving or not.

I can dig up the actual laws for it when I have a chance, but 90% sure that's the rule.

If you need a back up bumper, then you've got visual perception problems and shouldn't be driving at all.

He could also be protecting his bumper from other people?

I feel like this product would almost be an invitation for people to "park by feel" using your vehicle. Or, "oh that space is super tight, but he has a bumper guard so I'll try anyway". Also it's destroying your clear coat and scratching the shit out of your bumper underneath Doesn't seem worth it to me.

I also can't believe you can ever cover your plate. What if the police are looking for a parked vehicle or something?

I need this where I live. Car sits all week. Neighbors have tapped my car a couple times.

Yea pretty sure the plate needs to be visible to be on the street though

Pretty sure you're supposed to move your damn car every 72 hours. You don't own the spot all week.

God, I remember when I was in NYC seeing these things on super high end cars and just cringing at how bad the paint is getting scratched up under neath. Couldn't believe how many people bump when parking there.

It is because people take the term "bumper" literally, and say that is what they are designed for.

Not sure what leaving my car parked on the street has to do with my neighbors parking ability?

City can ticket me if they want. I'm not going to come up with an excuse to drive my car during the week.

A covered license plate in any fashion could result in a ticket and/or tow - section 77(1)(e) of the Alberta Traffic Safety Act. Section 53(1)(a) also is applicable.

    That was my first thought.

The scratches from the cover are probably WAY worse than any potential bumps you get from people who can't park.

Any city where parking is a premium, you will see f'd up bumpers.

I have not seen a single car in Macau that parks on the street has a pristine bumper.

That said, I don't see a need for this in Calgary. Unless you do street parking nightly.

That might be a city bylaw? I know in Airdrie my winter beater died in front of my buddies house in a spell of -30's (needed a new alternator) and I ended up leaving it there for like 6 weeks without moving. About 4 weeks in I got a call from the RCMP asking if my car had been stolen as someone reported it being abandoned. I laughed and told them what was up and they said not to worry and that it is legally plated and parked so there was nothing they could do about it and to just try and get it fixed up and moved as soon as possible just to be courteous to his neighbours...

I was going to say this is totally for NYC, i watched a thing about how bad the parking is there and its pretty much the norm to have your bumper bumped by people parking. The marketing pic is an NYC plate too lol
