When the Radon expert, Dr. Aaron Goodarzi, came for a public lecture at work, he said any short-term tests were frankly pointless. I can't remember the specifics now but there was a scientific reason that out of all the devices available for testing, EvictRadon uses what they use because it brought back the most reliable data.

The short term tests are pointless because radiation affects the body over time and in a cumulative manner, so it's the long term average that's important. A 1-day spike to 500 or even 1000 bq/m3 isn't going to do anything to you, but many years of that level will increase your chances of lung cancer significantly, for example. The Airthings Corentium does a 1day, 7day, and 1yr rolling average so after a while it becomes extremely accurate (according to the radon testers, about as good as their commercial equipment). The 3- pucks or any kind of instantaneous testing is mostly useless and at best just good for a rough indication.

If you're at say 500 bq/m3 for 3 months though, it's unlikely that drops down to zero afterwards, so it at least can serve as an indication that better testing is needed.

For the guy saying they wanted to re-use a central vacuum exhaust pipe - you can't. Typical pipe sizes for radon venting are 3" and 4" (4" being the most common and effective size), your central vacuum pipe isn't nearly big enough.
Challenge accepted. Pipe sizing and install is my bread and butter.

Haha I didn't notice it was you... yeah, maybe, but obviously you won't get acceptable results with any of the normal commercial radon fans. I think the target is about 2" water column pressure difference across the slab. Whatever gets you there I guess?

So.. the girlfriend got wind of the whole Radon thing and how it can cause health issues.

What are people using these days to monitor? I'm aware of the pucks being junk and will buy a proper monitor.

The pucks are useless because it only shows you a tiny snapshot in time so you might think you're fine when you're not, or you might get scared by a high result that just happened to be a short term spike. Sounds like you know this.

To my knowledge most people are using these: https://www.amazon.ca/Corentium-Airt...7105168&sr=8-5

It shows you 1 day average, 7 day average, and a constant average over time. They are also extremely accurate if placed properly. Radon has a cumulative effect on your health which is why short term readings are largely useless in terms of what you might find in your home.

Yeah the airthings is the one. You may be able to borrow one, or sell yours when you are done if you choose to.

Yeah seems to be one used. Doesn't allow reports though so you only get the display.

Looks like this one https://www.amazon.ca/Airthings-Dash...7106166&sr=8-7 uses a dashboard albeit being in the cloud *barf* but allows a good visual.

The reports are of limited use because the only number that really matters is the long term average, but if you like the visuals, that one will give them to you. It's less accurate than the simpler version but probably not to a degree that makes any real difference, especially over time.

LOL. When it comes to knowing and understanding.. Especially when its someone who is concerned.. visuals play a big role

Was the study through the U of C? Do you have more info on it?

It was through one of the universities - I dont recall but our Bq score was in the 40s after 6 months on the main floor (this was 4 years ago). I got an airwaves thing after I moved my office down into the basement.
