Any idea what date the Samsung Galaxy S8's will be physically available in Calgary? I've heard different dates from April 17th to April 28th.

Our office supplier told us next week, but they weren't 100% firm on a date. A ton of people put in orders so who knows.

Probably going to order mine this week for the S8+, but contemplating whether I should switch to Fido (from Telus) while I'm at it. Fido is $10/cheaper for double the data and similar device price.

I had no idea my Telus plan from just 1.5 years ago was already out-dated. $85 for unlimited local + 2GB. In order to qualify for the device upgrade price I need to change to a plan that's $105/month for the exact same data/minutes. Seems kind of silly

Sounds like a no-brainier to me - cheaper with double the data. Telus plans were horrid when I was shopping around December. Ended up staying with Fido on a promo plan for $60/mo, unlimited everything else within Canada, unlimited text to USA, 6GB data, and 1000 international minutes. I always bring my own phone so the plans are way better.

Most companies are playing the same game now though - they simply take the cost of your phone discount divided by contract months and add it on top of your base contract. That's why you see so many outrageous $90-100/mo contracts these days, because people want $1200 phones for $200. That same plan with a cheaper phone would be $60/mo or whatever. Nobody gets a deal anymore, it's simply a matter of if you want to pay upfront or over time.

Heard, they will start monthly patching on Samsung devices but I assume if you get it from telco, they will cock block that still?

The telco's can block whatever they want, but you can always still patch it yourself if you're so inclined.

Probably. On my S6/7 I get quarterly security patches instead of monthly

Same. Nougat came out half a year ago. Just got it the other day.

Is the S8 really that big of a jump from S7? Not thinking I'm upgrading yet.

The S8 is more of an upgrade to the S7 than the S6 to S7 was. Pretty solid upgrade this time around. If you have an S7 already though, it's already so good that I wouldn't get the S8 unless you really want/need it.

Last one I went S3 to S7 so that's why I felt S7 to S8 is like trading your Civic LX in for a Civic SE.

If you managed to hold out from S3 -- S7 I definitely wouldn't upgrade haha.

Agree. Probably not worth upgrading from S7 to S8.

i'm upgrading from a S6Edge+ to the S8+, mostly because stupid me I only got the 32GB version (too impatient), and the S6Edge doesn't have a SD slot.

My wife is already looking at different phones to replace hers.

Meanwhile my S4 is nearly unusable at this point, every-time I unlock the screen I get a bunch of error messages that I have to click through. It stopped syncing up properly with my GearS2 watch about 2 months ago.

The S4 is getting pretty old, but that is not typical behavior for the S7 at all. We have 2 in the family and a bunch at work, none behave like you describe - something else is going on. My GS6 is 2 years old now and has only gotten faster with better battery life with the updates - zero issues with it. My mom, brother, and GF are also still rocking GS6's and none have any of the above issues after ~2 years of rough use. If you have 4hr battery life without a misbehaving app obviously being the culprit, you should be going after a warranty replacement. Not quite as old as your S4 but a few guys at work just replaced their GS5's, and they worked perfectly up until they decided to order a 7/8.

If you're actually having those issues, they are definitely not normal and you should get the phone replaced under warranty.

Fair enough, sounds like you've had some unusually bad luck with the brand in general. I've had similar experiences with other brands and I can see how it leaves a bad taste.
