Heading to Ottawa tomorrow for a long weekend. Will be staying close to parliament. Any suggestions on things to do or eat?

    Touristy things to do....

Tour Parliament... Contact your local MP here to see if they can get you tickets and have them set aside at the tour office (sometimes they sell out)

Byward market is close and walking distance.

Depends what you like to do i guess.

Byward Market is a nice stroll. Lots of things to see/shops in there. Rideau center nearby but thats pretty much like any mall. Rideau Canal nearby is a nice walk along the locks.

Dont be afraid to do the touristy stuff:

Parliament, Chateau Laurier, Rideau Hall, War memorial.

There are also so many museums. I highly recommend the Canadian War Museum (amazing to see). If you like Art - the National Gallery is near the market. The Aviation museum is a bit further but worth it if you like planes/if you have kids.

Love that area. Parliament, Bank of Canada, Supreme Court, Rideau Canal, feel very Canadian just walking around there. See what's at the gallery, they had Van Gogh on exhibit when I was there. The regular exhibits are cool too. Then drink till you pass out at Byward Market. I did wander over to Quebec at one point, that got weird lol.

Just bumping this thread.... this year I will be in Ottawa for a continuous 5 weeks for work. I plan on hitting all the museums mentioned.

Any specific pubs or restaurants to check out? I’ve been to the Rose and Crown before and found it decent.

Any good places to check out within a short drive from Ottawa? I’ll have weekends off and can rent a car.

You won't even want to be driving. Montreal drivers are insane. Last time we went, I just parked the car at a friends for the whole week.

Skate the canals! Driving through Gatineau is quite nice.

There's an oyster bar, it's tiny, close to the Natural History Museum. Highly recommend. --- Whalebone on Bank St

Well, I finished my stint in Ottawa, and I want to thank all the people in this thread for their recommends! I was able to see many of the places mentioned here, and recommend the following places for anyone else thinking of going:

    - the Canadian War Museum: It really is amazing. I spent 4.5 hours there and ran out of time. I would plan on 5-6 hours to be able to see everything. I ended up having to speed walk through the early Canada stuff and focused on WW1 and onward.
    - the Aviation museum was well worth it also. It was cool to finally see a ME 163 Komet in person, and the cockpit-forward section of an Avro Arrow.
    - Byward Market area - lots of good pubs and places to go for supper. My commonly visited places there was the Heart and Crown pub and the Senate tavern.
    - Mill St. Brewery - it’s a short walking distance from the war museum and had great beer on tap and good food too.
    - Clandestin Cuisine Creative- really good restaurant in Gatineau. The TINY seating area means you’ll likely have to book a reservation to get in when you want.
    - Coconut Lagoon - good place for Indian food.
    - Caught a Senators/Sabres game for $22/ticket

Uber was very well established in Ottawa and the longest I had to wait was 6 minutes for a ride from an obscure area of town when we went off on a drunk pizza excursion to some hole in the wall place. I wouldn’t even waste my time with taxis there.
