Driver's training vehicle

Just for shots and giggle, if you took a driver's training course what type of vehicle was it in?

I took AMA's driver training in 1977 in Lethbridge and amazingly the vehicle AMA provided was a 1977 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. Looked goofy as hell with the big ass AMA thing on top but hey, it was a Z28. My instructor went so far as to one day have us switch seats because he said I wasn't driving up to the car's capabilities and showed how I should be driving that car. Coolest instructor ever.

Instructor rented a Dodge Journey for the Road test.

circa 2000, probably a 95-97 Pontiac Sunfire. I hated that thing as I was used to driving full-sized pickups.

Late 90's Tercel....I just remember having to drive her around for groceries/banking/etc "Turn here, turn there, ok park here. I gotta run into Walmart for a few minutes, leave the car off"

I guess she thought it was ok to run errands on my parents tab

It was Chinook Driving School and the guy was the biggest A-hole I've come across in my life. Pretty sure his name was Dave Powell, I will never forget that awful person. He would make me sit wait 10-15mins for his smoke breaks on paid time, and take him around to run errands.

And now I see AMA using new WRX's, Lexus's, etc. haha.

93 - Don't remember, I think it was a Tercel or Corolla. Nothing special about it at all. Instructor was great though, I still remember and use his techniques all the time.

Same lady in my hometown taught driver training at both the public & catholic high schools for 20 years. We took it as a class in grade 10, no charge.

When I first got into the insurance business in 1999 we probably had 19 out of 20 new drivers complete driver training. Now it's probably 1 in 10.

Does it really effect rates as much as they drilled into our heads as 90's teens?

For my parents, it was cheaper insurance, for me, it was getting my license months earlier

3 Banger Geo Metro.. it was fun since it was a manual transmission.. I still remember I had to keep it under 90km on the highway so it would not "fall apart"

2001 for me. Brand new Jetta VR6 with a manual transmission, took lessons through AMA.

Instructor was an ex-cop, and he was an awesome guy, and great at his job.

And that's the root of the issue, economics.

Back in the day a DT course was about $300 - $500 but would save you $500 - $800 a year for the first three years. It was a no brainer, even if you thought you were the worlds greatest driver you still did the course just to save on the insurance. Now the tables have turned and the cost of the courses are often $800 - $1000 and on PLPD will save you $200 the first year and $100 the second year. If you've got a newer car with full coverage the numbers are a bit better but most new drivers start on a beater.

Some Hindi school in 2002, it was using a 1999 corolla, my moms car at the time was a 2001 corolla, so it made it really easy for me to get comfortable and pass first try!

I always advise people to perform the test in the dead of winter, it was impossible for the corolla to get over 40kph and there was no lines or traffic so I had no real deductions

I think it was a brand spanking new model Neon; back in 1998. Then immediately getting my DL, got into my PDR dent fixing training where the shop's customer were rental car companies with brand new 3-9 months under 20,000km vehicles, letting fresh kids tripping cars around. Oh those were the old days, well, not Speedog style carburetor days, but still good days.
