I was talking to a guy today and he brought up the door pull. I said I wouldn't believe that someone would not know the difference between a rope with a knot tied in it, and a noose. So if a person said they found a noose, I'd have to believe them because you'd have to be the dumbest person on earth to not know what a noose looks like or doesn't look like. Further, a "noose" was only "found" in the 43's stall, and if it was just a rope then every other stall would also have a "noose". And further still, since ARCA and the Xfinity series would have used those garages earlier in the weekend, and they didn't find a noose, it would have to be left there after that stall was assigned to the 43.

It turns out I'm the big fuckin idiot.

So should we expect some sort of retraction by all parties affected, namely NASCAR and RPM and Bubba Wallace. Sounds like the noose was there since at least last fall. Heightened emotions led to a bit of the horse before the cart in this case.

As far as nooses, they are a bit of a satisfying thing to create although they serve no purpose for the general populace - there are multitudes of other knots/ties that do things better for everyday uses.

Not a chance, NASCAR will not issue a retraction or apology because nobody was directly blamed for it. They will say "look how well we supported Bubba!" and pat themselves on the back for chasing off that scary, racist door pull.

This is not going to calm down the people who were upset by the confederate flag ban.

What did Bubba say in all this that should be retracted? I honestly don't know, I haven't been keeping up with what everybody has said.

As they should. I don't think there's anything shameful in supporting a peer. Knowing what they know now I'm sure they would do things differently, but at the time showing their friend that they'd rather he didn't get lynched is the right move.

NASCAR has already drawn that line in the sand and I don't see them backing down from that one.

He's been very vocal about it being a noose (despite never having seen it - one of his crew spotted it and reported it before it was removed) and was pretty publically aggressive towards anyone that thought it might be misunderstanding rather than a racially-motivated threat on his life. Now that the FBI has concluded it wasn't a noose at all, he's doubled down and is still claiming it was totally a noose and therefore a hate crime.

I see. Yeah, that's unfortunate for sure.

On the other hand, I don't know what it's like to be black in the south. I'm not sure I'd act appropriately if something like this was posted about me:

It's probably a tough spot to be in when the spotlight is on you at a time like this.

There absolutely IS rampant racism in the US south where NASCAR is based and where the majority of the owners, drivers, employees and fans live. I don't think that's even debatable. The noose/not-a-noose situation is going to make this even more into an us-vs-them thing.

Side note, check out Uppity on Netflix. It is a very appropriate for the moment documentary about Willy T Ribbs and the struggles he had in his career.
are there any pictures of this noose in question?

I only ask as I do the same thing with the cord on my garage door, but I tie it as a slip knot which could be misconstrued as a noose by some I would guess. I tie it like that to keep it up out of the way, but if I need to actually disengage the door from the chain drive, I can still easily pull the handle and it all comes undone.

I’ve always thought I was an idiot for only knowing how to tie the “shoelace knot”. Packaging up some shit? Shoelace. Tying up a boat? Shoelace. Today, I’m glad that’s all I know.

ok, yeah. That's not anything like the slip knots I tie.

I got nothing else to add. I am doing my best to steer clear of the whole conversation. I am too afraid I will say the wrong thing and get screwed over.

I get it is a pull string and been there a while, but that sure as shit is a strange way to tie a knot into a pull cord.

Whoever did that was clearly flexing their knot skills.

Proper nooses are such a pain in the ass knot to tie. A real hassle, and not handy for a door pull because it would tighten around your hand as you pulled. I'm guessing this os a different loop knot. Although that doesn't make any difference to the discussion either way. I just was a boy scout for a lot of years and I swear I once knew ALL the knots.

About half of it. Yes. Although my neuroses go much deeper than that.

It's a loop knot, anyone who's been fishing for a while (which I'd imagine is pretty prevalent among NASCAR crews, seems like their kinda thing) would know how to tie one from tying lures. It's also a good knot for dealing with long cordage since you can just wrap the knot a bunch of times to get rid of the loose end. An actual hangman's knot would be a stupid thing for a door pull as it would constrict your hand every time you used it.
