The home we're moving into has a Vivint security system installed and the sellers are asking if we want to take it over, do these units use cellular in place of landlines?

My insurance broker says I can get a $350 discount on home insurance if it covers burglary and fire, so it would work out to be ~$18/month out of pocket between the $47/monthly cost to vivint and the discount on home insurance. Not a terrible monthly cost.

Could be land, could be cell.

Do true land lines even really exist anymore?

    Serious question.

Even Telus the twisted copper kings, when I looked at a home phone last they just install a cellular base station for homes with fibre now.

Shaw is probably ironically the only ones that do it today.

All calls are VOIP these days.

POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) does not exist anymore.

It all goes to the interwebs now.

VOIP is so much easier to maintain there are no use cases where POTS is cheaper for the telecoms.

The Vivint panels definitely run off a cell card if needed, otherwise use wifi. (I just had my card upgraded from 3G to 4G). If the equipment is paid for, low to mid $30s/month for monitoring is all you need to pay. (tell them that’s all you will pay)

Thanks for the info. Sellers confirmed it's cellular not landline. It's an acreage so thought it might be old landline perhaps.

Wasn't sure if alarm systems could be on your home internet connection, if you have an internet outage does the alarm do nothing otherwise?

Either way, for the price after factoring in home insurance discount we're gunna roll with it and get the account transferred to us and I'll see what's what. Seller says there's 18 months left on the contract.

Is your insurance offering a decent discount? Must be area specific or provider specific. It was years ago but mine was nearly nothing.

The panel and all sensors use their own proprietary wireless network. External comms to your mobile device will use wifi so it’s nice and quick. If no wifi, then external comms will go through cellular. That is one major advantage Vivint has over many other monitored systems relying on Alarm.com backbone, the speed is much, much faster.

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

    They just use Z-wave.

Most I have run on 345 MHz on Vivint’s system, but the panel also has a z-wave radio for 3rd party stuff. I have a Vivint translator to talk to my really old z-wave hardware.

@2Legit2Quit It is cellular but not sure how useful the equipment will be as Telus is buying Vivint's Canadian division. Not sure if you can even get much info on how this is going to work at this point as we just got notified late last week.

I get the feeling this will be end of the line for current Vivint users.

I'm assuming we'll be forced to transition over to the telus home security equipment. Good i'm month to month vs. having a contract with them still.
