They're in the process of releasing their outdoor cam, hopefully comes on Amazon soon!

I have 3 outside and this will be their 3rd winter. As long as they are kept from getting wet directly they will be fine. They produce a lot of heat and don’t freeze up.

I've had mine pretty exposed without a housing where it's been rained on pretty heavily and it hasn't given up. I think it's taken some pea sized hail hits too.

I have a project coming up that will involve adding some outdoor security camera. I am having trouble deciding if I want to go POE (eg Unifi or ReoLink) or go completely wireless (eg Wyze). Is there even an option to plug the camera into an exterior outlet while using wireless?
If I go wireless, is Wyze still the most economical way to go ?

Also, which exterior cam can withstand our cold climate?

Always POE if you can. You never have to worry about weather killing the battery or wifi signal strength. Also with POE you can easily have a UPS that powers them in the event of a power outage too.

I apologize for hijacking this thread. But any recommendations for POE system aside from UniFi?

unifi is the best combo of works great and cheap. Otherwise I dunno maybe try FS? Assuming Cisco is out of price range?

I have some Dahua cameras recording to a Synology NAS. If I were to redo it, I might have gone Unifi. Their new offerings look pretty decent for the price.

My dad has the Costco POE Lorex system and it's been solid. Setup was kinda finicky as I did have to power cycle some of the cameras a couple times before I could find them but once it was setup it was solid
2 years and nothing has had to be powercycled

Have you experienced any issues on colder days? Say -20 and lower?

Not worth starting a new thread, so I'm bumping the most appropriate thread. TLDR: If you're thinking about signing up for Vivint and wonder what your exit plan is, consider your own death as a more attractive option than having to deal with the cancellation department.

Man Vivint is miserable to try to get out of. I sold my house and forgot to do anything about cancelling their service. Possession date was Friday. Rather than fuck around waiting on hold, I took a chance on using the chat on the app. Was told no, you need to call in for that. Okay, not a problem. The guy on the chat asked me if he could send me a text or an email with a referral code if I knew anyone who wanted to sign up. I said yes, so he did.

I called the number the chat guy gave me. It wasn't the right number, but that guy forwarded me onto the right department. Then that guy told me they had no email address on file. I don't know how that could be, because the chat guy managed to email me, but that's fine. Let's put one on file. He can't do it. I need to be transferred to another department. Cool. So that gets done. Transfer me back to the cancellation guy. I want to cancel. He tells me I can transfer my service to my next house. I don't have a next house. Well, maybe the new homeowners would like to use Vivint. I tell them that's something for them to find out for themselves. He asks me if I have contact info. I give him the address and tell him to go bang on the door. Then he tells me since I own the equipment I can go get it and just restart the service. I tell him man, lets just skip to the end of the script because all I want to do is cancel. So he tells me I can't cancel over the phone. He needs to email me instructions, which I need to email back. Oh fuckin cool.

No email comes so I need to call back. Get a different guy, but the same script. I tell him I've been happy enough with Vivint for the last few years, but I don't have to be. So please just let me cancel. Sure thing, one problem though, no email address on file. Fuck me. Off to the email department. She makes me spell out my email address. For some reason, everyone at Vivint insists on putting an H at the end of my name. I spell it out every single time and not once have I put an H at the end of it. Since my family came over from Norway in the 1880s they haven't put an H at the end of it. Finally I convince her that the spelling I gave her is correct, and I get sent back to cancellation. Buddy sends me the email and I'm off.

Now I got the email, and all I have to do is give them my name, address and the reason for cancellation. This is all info that I gave both of the cancel department guys. But it has to be emailed. And the cherry on top is that it's not effective immediately. It won't be cancelled for another 30 days, and in that time I'll be getting another bill for that month. Just lovely.

Well, if I'm going to be paying for it I might as well use it. The new owners managed to arm the alarm on their own at 12:29 this morning, and then set it off at 12:47. At 1:13 I got a phone call from Vivint telling me they were dispatching the police. I didn't hear the phone ring so I just got the voicemail this morning (with my name pronounced with an N - my full name is 17 letters long, none are N). If they're going to keep this up I'm going to turn their furnace on.

So our friends had an attempted breakin on monday and they also have vivent. The burglars tried to bust down the front door and the back door at 3am. The door was so busted it now cant be opened and theres a 2x4 propping it closed from inside the door. Vivent did not respond to the alarm going off until 4am. A neighbor called the cops and the police were there in 10mins, the neighbor also heard the noise and scared them away.

Now they had 2 cameras at the front and 2 at the back and the burglars didnt care about that at all, they also didnt care about the alarm going off, it wasnt until the neighbor came out. The camera system they had was a Hikvision DVR system however they hadnt touched it since they moved in 2 years ago, they also couldnt access the dvr at all, I pulled the hdd last night and analyzed it - the last saved recording was may 2020 and the system had reportedly being beeping since last year (beeping because the drive was full).

So They want to replace the system, the cameras locations are good and they have POE cables to each location, the camera quality is only black and white and the resolution seems poor to me.
I want to recommend a POE system as well but they don't seem the type that works well with the DVR system. I think ideally I would want POE with sd cards and an app so they can check it remotely. Any suggestions?

I use lorex wireless cams on my house that use sd cards and an app and no subscription and its really great.

How many Cameras? I would suggest buying computer with decent hard drive space and run milestone using the existing cameras. Doesn't need to be special. Mines running on an old 2nd gen i5.
