I have an older Reolink DVR system and it's pretty much plug and play on POE.
Can be accessed on your home computer or via the app. You can save videos on both the comp and app. Cameras also have an SD card slot if you want to use it.
Live streams well and you can set alerts etc.
I don't play with any of the features so it works well for me. View, record, and download.
Its been running 24/7 for almost 5 years with 10 cameras. No issues yet.

We also have Vivint and its been ok. Originally got it because my wife was home alone in a new area with our newborn. It was for her peace of mind.
We also get a discount on the home insurance and in the end only really pay $15 a month with the wash.

    Security companies are trash.
as someone that works in the security industry, this is completely true. They are basically cell phone companies with the ability to fuck up your walls.

I've said before, and I still think, the main value from the security company is the sticker in the window. I used to be on United back when this stuff was $20/mo, and I thought I wasn't getting the value at that price. I'm down to the $0/mo plan and feel I have the same level of theft deterrence, because the tickers are still in the window.

I used to pay $40 a month with ADT then I cancelled and kept the sign, added one camera to the driveway and Ive not ever had a problem.

The guy down the street from our friend in the same neighborhood had his house broken into twice in one night. The neighborhood houses are between 1 and 3 million dollars.

Not sure I agree anymore - I used to think the main value was the signs / stickers until my house was broken into. Middle of the day with alarm system, 7 cameras, dogs.
The value of having an alarm with dispatch is it makes the thieves hurry. They don't care that there is an alarm system (or cameras), but they do know they have at least 10-15 mins before the police arrive so it was a quick smash and grab - master bedroom for jewelry, (and a pillow case to carry everything) office for a laptop then out the door. Otherwise they could have spent the entire afternoon in the place and cleaned it out....

That's a unique take on the value proposition.

I guess - pretty much so they assume police will be there shortly (hopefully) and they’ll take what they want and get the hell out of there. Most thieves do not want to run into home owners, and middle of the day break-ins (when people are at work) are more common than at night.

The other value proposition would be adding a bolt buddy / strike plates and high security deadbolts. Chances are they will walk next door and find an easier target.

I think cameras are super useful because human-shaped humans who may or may not be hatless generally carry their license plates and DL's taped prominently to their foggy head regions so that 8-bit trash cameras can record their posterity.

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

People still pay for home security monitoring?

No. I pay for the cellular data plan needed by the panel.

Damn. I wonder what type of plan Telus will try and move me to then and the cost uptake. I've done what others have suggested here and grinded the nuts out of Vivint and I literally pay $20 a month for their services now haha. Def don't want to pay more.

What's everyone using nowadays anyway for alternatives to Telus, Vivint, etc. re: home security?

Reading Reddit replies, Telus will replace all your equipment and expect you to start another contract to pay for it all.

I've had vivint for a while. Their monitoring and record times are shit. I had it out with them for the fucking thing not recording when we had a break in, in our motorhome where our camera points right at.

I was hoping to get some traction with advice on DiY alternatives.

I’ve liked nest. Shame it’s been graveyarded by google.

Any amount of money monthly is too much for the value received.

Ring has an interesting retrofit system I might try. Basically plug your existing sensors into it to bring a legacy system into the 21st century.

Yep saw that and it's supposed to be more expensive and you have to purchase new sensors to replace what you already have.

I use konnected.io for the same thing. Just a board you plug all your sensors into, and I tie it into homeassistant (but you can tie it into samsung smartthings instead). Lets me double up sensors to trigger lights and such.
