So are the major oil companies done with their layoffs or are they just doing it in small numbers so people don't realize its actually going on?
They will keep tuning to make sure lowest cost possible. But the rush to turf to please shareholders and creditors is gone.

A few places that does fracking vehicles actually got booming business from US due to new EPA rules so order got pushed up to before new rules comes down. But that just means slower 2018 tho.

Has anyone asked to be laid off or volunteer? I have been wanting to quit for a while now and my company has just finished two rounds of small layoffs. I am thinking this might be a good time to just ask.

Be very careful how you do this if they haven't asked for volunteers. It can be construed as you quitting, in which case you aren't entitled to severance or EI.

It also means they may out you at the back of the line in hopes that you would quit of your own account.

After taking a month off I started applying for automation jobs (6 yrs exp). Got 2 call backs for interviews on 4 applications off indeed so seems like things are decently picking up.

Managed to get a summer student job at a major O&G company, geosciences.

HR told me over 150 people applied for the two positions.

For students or new grads, it's a crapshoot still and you HAVE to know someone at the company to pass along your resume to managers and HR. Otherwise you'll never get in, I promise you.

maybe this is true majority of the time, but i got a job by just applying online. beat out quite a few people and internal candidates because i interviewed well and had some unique experience.

this is tough because if you volunteer before they ask, they can undercut the severance by a lot. i see no advantage

Depends, lots of places have severance built into your employment agreement. You should have a pretty good idea of the severance you are getting before asking for a layoff.

Things are starting to look up at my company.

Most people in the company are back to pre-recession salaries (total cut of 30% at the peak), I am still down ~12% due to how my salary is structured, but there has been talk about getting me that remaining balance back.

    Oilfield Services company.

There's a minimum severance in the employment agreement sometimes yes, but especially oil and gas companies have in the past given more than that, or done things with long term incentives, benefits or outplacement services that are above that minimum amount.

I wonder when Oil/Gas places will start to give salary raises to employees again?

My wife hasn't had a salary increase in her position (Project Engineer) for 4 years, and shes at an Oil Producer, shes managed to avoid all the rounds of layoffs and now the company has learned and is not doing big layoffs just layoffs every week - since the start of the recession shes managed to laterally move twice but no raise either time. I guess its also hard to know whether her current salary is good for a producer given experience or not.

Thought it was pretty standard. The default legal severance amounts is bullshit, so employers entice potential employees with much better packages.

I think my current severance stands at around 2 years salary haha, but I've been here for almost 1/2 my life.

It usually is in bigger work places. Mom and pop shops, no way.

but especially oil and gas companies have in the past given more than that, or done things with long term incentives, benefits or outplacement services that are above that minimum amount.
Well sure, that is a risk/reward you have to take. By asking for a layoff NOW, you will probably only get the minimum dictated in your agreement. By waiting, you may miss job opportunities. As the saying goes, "your mileage may vary". Severance is HUGE part of compensation nowadays, with how quick business cycles are and how short term positions in a company are, it would be crazy not to factor it into whether you would want to work somewhere.

Heard C&J sold their Canadian rig division to CWC. Only retaining about 85% of the employees apparently.

Yep, confirmed. Doesn't sound like any of the sales guys are going over, not sure who else though.

1 guy in Calgary is from what I heard. I know they are laying all the mechanics off in Sylvan. Will be interesting to see. CWC runs pretty lean so I was kind of surprised they were taking 85%.
