Default chain link vs. wood-which fence is better?

Looking to replacing the fence with the neighbors. I know wood is the most popular but thoughts on either or is most appreciated.

pets/animals/rodents getting under a chain link?
cost of one vs. the other (psf)?
upkeep or maintenance with a chain link?

We've got wood on one side and the rear and chain link on the other side - by far chain link is absolutely zero maintenance. I the almost 21 years we've been in this home, both wood fences have had to be replacd plus maintained - the chain link which was her before we were and is probably 37-38 years old just soldiers along.

Now the wood fences do provide more privacy but our rear wood fence is only 5 feet tall and is a board on board good neighbor fence. The chain link fence between us and our one neighbor is in an area where privacy is already provided by bushes and the neighbor's green house.

Personally, I would never put in a chain link fence just because you just can not make them attractive but they certainly are no maintenance. Maybe look at a plastic fence as an alternative, we've got a few people in our block who have these and they appear to be no maintenance as well. As for initial cost, I would expect chain link and plastic to be higher but the savings will be found in no maintenance over the years.
    Will fuck off, again.

Can't you just buy those plastic weaves to go in the chain link to make it private and maintain the no-maintenance?

I love the look the white vinyl fences. No maintenance and always look great but then its cookie cutter and white

I think wood looks better but I think its significantly more money. Are there any beyonders that can come give me a quote on both?

I've been wanting to do my fence this year and share the cost with my neighbors.

I don't care how much you like your neighbors, 6 foot wood fence all around. Because trust me, if you don't have one, you will hate your neighbors soon enough.

I actually have an 8 foot fence on one side. Love that fence

Wood fence for aesthetics; chain-link for zero-maintenance.

Mandated chainlink in my hood. 0 maintenance. But I hate looking at a few of my neighbor's yards.

with smaller yards the chainlink lets in a lot more light, which can be a plus if you have a stupid narrow infill lot with a garage taking up most of the space.

Wood fence rules for privacy though.

I would never move to a neighbor hood that didn't allow 6 foot wood fence. Mandated chainlink, wouldn't even consider buying the property. The neighbor's trampolines, dogs and dog shit will make your backyard useless

crappy thing is if one side wants wood and the other chain link. Looks dumb if you have different sides...

Definitely privacy for a 6ft fence but everyone is 2 story here so really negates the whole privacy when they can see you from their bedroom window (vice versa). 8ft. fence... hmmm!!

I just don't like the maintenance with a wood fence but since some parts were recently replaced, better to keep it all the same...

We've lived in our home for 20+ years and have had less than 6 foot tall fences on all sides and get along great with our neighbors.

It is interesting to see how many have problems/issues with their neighbors - we must be lucky I guess, really only 1 neighbor within 10 plus houses in either direction on our street or alley that I can complain about. Pretty good for 30 neighbors and the annoying one is just because they cultivate dandelions very well and they've gotten much better at controlling that over the past 2-3 years.

Precast concrete fence is the way to go! The neighbor won the lottery and decided to redo their house, they paid for a 8ft fence between us - great wall of china. They eventually realized how much money they had and moved to a nicer neighborhood lol. We got a matching 6ft on the other side.

It's pricey, but no maintenance and looks fantastic.
Between wood and link, I wouldn't want to share a link fence. No privacy and ugly.

Wood all the way. Only reason I'd put chain is if i had a nice view or something that the wood would obstruct. We have chain now because we have to and the two neighbours to the left both have these yappy annoying dogs that I hate and their lawns look like crap.

The cheapest wood fence I do works out to be about $36/linear foot.

Chainlink runs about $22-24/LF IIRC. I don't do enough of those to quote a more solid number.
