Default Driving without a windshield - What's the penalty?

Work is going to be getting a fleet of vehicles all done up with windshields, looking to hop onto the savings train with my truck. Sad part is I kicked out the old windshield to give it a paint job. I was thinking of just throwing on the ol motorcycle helmet and driving it to the shop. If I do get stopped, is there a penalty? If so, how much?

Thank you, did a google search but came up with nothing. What constitutes a windshield? Does it have to be DOT? I bed I could make something happen

Not equipped per TSA - likely towed to impound.

You'd be better off getting a mobile guy to come to you.

Could probably have a buddy get it towed for you if they have AMA.

Burn up one of their yearly tows in exchange for some beer.

I think it depends on the situation. My dad removed the windshield on his Caterham and I wear a helmet whenever I ride in or drive it and I've never been hassled, but the "OEM" windshield is hardly a windshield anyway. I could see a normal production truck being noticed without a windshield a lot easier.

Do it early in the AM one day, stick to the back roads. Nothing to worry about.

    Alberta Vehicle Equipment Regs:-

69 A motor vehicle, other than a motor cycle or moped, must have a windshield.

The fine is $155 and you would be impounded.

Thank you. Definitely not worth chancing to save a couple bucks on a windshield.

Any one know the reason WHY the vehicle needs a windshield? I always hear those commercials saying "it's a structural part of the vehicle" but it's just glass.

Would a Jeep Wrangler, which is designed to allow the windshield to be folded flat, be ticketed under the same law?

No, in this case, the manufacturer has applied for and received an engineering exemption, ie the vehicle is still structurally sound without a windshield. Its not the fact that the windshield stops bugs etc, people forget that the windshield itself actually makes up an integral part of the vehicles stability. Now before people start flaming me etc, I personally don't care. Do some research on this, it's actually kinda fascinating how a bit of "glass",makes a difference in the engineering of a vehicle.

Just ask if they will do it at your house. Might cost a few extra bucks, but they may give you the same price. Either way, you then have nothing to worry about.

The glass company we use at work will give the same discount to employees and we always have employees windshields being changed in the shop. I know they have mentioned they could go to a home as well. Just ask.

Yep mobile service is the way to go, that's what I did with my pops car, not much of an extra charge either. I can't remember who we used but they did a good job.

It's not super smart but based on the sheer quantity of vehicles that violate the TSA on the road every day I doubt you'd get pulled over

    E.g.:
    • Those stupid license plate covers that make them hard to read
    • Blue LED lights that make you think you have a cop in your rearview for a quarter second glance
    • Trucks without mud flaps
    • Poorly tarped loads
