When changing after market rims, I squished one of the hub rings, rending it unusable.
if I make sure to keep the missing ring on back tire, is it necessary to have these rings on all wheels?

The Hub rings ensure the rim is centered on the hub, i cannot imagine how much vibration you would have without one.

No, it isn't necessary...as long as you torque the wheels in the proper pattern, the wheel will center properly.
