    Default Vehicle registration refund?

Just a quick question here about paying your annual plate/vehicle registration.

I just sold a vehicle but also just renewed the registration for it. My friend just said that I could get a refund for this. Can this be done? Do I just bring in my plate with the year and month stickers on it? It's a personalized plate so do they keep the plate or just take off the stickers? Anyone know the process of this?

    Cheers.

I cant say for a personal plate but last time i did it (several years ago) for a normal plate (i had to surrender the plate as well) they would refund you the prorated amount left minus $15 fee

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

So I guess it's a matter of how much your personal plate is worth to you then huh? I like to hang onto them for nostalgia but then again, they gave me two plates so I guess I could hang onto that one. I'm just wondering now, if I wanted to use the second one later down the road, would I be able to? Maybe I'll just bring it in and see what they say.

    Cheers for the response man!

I would imagine for a personal plate they'd let you keep it, after all you did pay a hefty premium for it, but yeah i cant say for sure, i know there are a few registry people on here, maybe one will chime in.

I've gone in and cancelled registration without bringing the plate and was refunded. Just don't keep driving with the plate since it's no longer valid

If you have another vehicle with a regular plate, can't you transfer the registration to your vanity plate and surrender the regular plate and get refund for the remaining period? Otherwise I would just forget about it and keep the plate if I was you.

You just go in with the registration and cancel the registration. They ask you about the plate and you just say you want to keep it as you will reuse it in the future and that's it. The ab gov will send you a cheque for the difference.

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

Plates are always yours, forever. When you sell a car, cancel the registration on it, and you'll get a cheque in the mail for the pro-rated difference. I've never had to turn in a plate when cancelling registration, for standard, personalized, or the fancy support the troops plates.

I didn't even realize it was a process, just standard operating procedures.

There's two ways to cancel the plate. Assuming you want to keep the vanity plate, tell the agent you want to cancel the registration and keep the plate. The wording is important.

If you say you want to cancel the plate, you'll lose ownership of the vanity plate and it will belong to the gov. A good agent will double check with you that cancelling the plate IS what you want. But - to be safe, use the wording above. You'll get a refund for the remaining registration time

Just to be clear, same thing goes for normal plates as well right? Because I've cancelled registration on normal plates and have reused them before.
