    Default Basement Home Theatre options?

Building out my basement home theatre and thought I would get some opinions on:
    - home theatre projector and screen
    - home theatre receiver

I am not a HUGE audiophile but am running a 7.2 setup and have the inwall/inceiling speakers already.

Only thing I really want for a projector is 1080p. 100" would be ideal

    Any recommendations for equipment?

    Thanks!

I have been looking at projectors and haven't really noticed any or maybe they are just way over my budget?

Last I checked 4K projector was 5k and up. You can get a nice 1080p for $1000. Bulbs last 2000-3000hrs and are 200-300 for a replacement, or a knock off is 50-60 I think but don't expect it to last as long.

Looking at $2000 for the projector and receiver together. I guess 4K isn't in the budget.

Definitely get a nice screen rather than just a painted wall.

Be sure to put a power socket on the ceiling as well as some conduit to your AV gear. You can get long HDMI cables from monoprice.

Running two HDMI isn't a bad idea, especially if you aren't able to fish new ones in at a later date. Once you damage the end of an HDMI cable the entire thing is trash, unlike a CAT5/6 cable which is easy to terminate yourself. Ask me how I know . . . I've got Two HDMI cables that are unfishable that are both junk behind drywall in my basement ceiling.

I picked up the Epson 2500 about a year ago, and absolutely love it. People are surprised how well it looks and I have it on a painted wall. Decent refresh rate as well so I don't have any issues playing the xbox. They discontinued the 2500 but the 3100 is still in rotation.

Speakers behind the projector screen, but you need to make sure the screen you get allows sound to pass through or it'll be muffled and sound like crap.

I am putting two in wall speakers beside the projector, a centre under the screen, Centres in the ceiling and rear centres in the back wall. Only speaker that will sit out is the subwoofer

the Optoma UHD60 just came out, or is coming out this week, and its only $2k USD, previously the cheapest true 4k projector was in the 8k range, might be worth a look to avoid upgrading in the future.

It's not the size that matters, it's the taste it leaves in your mouth.

Call BASE Electronics - they specialize in Epson. They will probably do a cost + 10% deal with you, and also be able to supply a screen. On top of that they usually have a stack of 1-year-old high end receivers sitting around for a great price. I've bought all my HT gear through them for the last 8 years or so.

Carada made the best screens, but they are sadly no longer in business.

Another huge bang for the buck projector is the BENQ 1070/1250W. You can find refurbs for as low as $650. A newer version is out now and it's still under $1000 if you prefer DLP projectors:

I've set up a couple of these now and if you told someone it was a $10,000 projector, they would probably believe you. The gap in picture quality is so small now between the high end and consumer level that I bet 99% of people would never tell a difference. The only thing worth paying a lot more for (when it gets cheaper) in the projector world will be native 4K w/HDR with a laser/LED light source. Most people would be blown away with what a properly set up $600-$1000 projector can do these days on a 100" screen or so.

Am I the only one who thinks in wall speakers never sound that good? Or am I just basing that off older tech?

I'm not a fan. Even the best ones you can buy never sound as good as a tower. Lots of people these days just want totally clean setups though, or nothing expensive sitting on the floor that kids/pets can encounter. Those same people usually don't really care about getting the best sound though, so it doesn't matter. I would use them for surrounds if convenient though since they do almost nothing in a movie except provide ambient noise, helicopter/bullet sounds, etc.

I used to think the same way but no more. Proper in-wall speakers sounds almost as good as floor standing speakers. However they are not that cheap.
