I’m looking to restore a road bike and not sure where to go and get fixer upper on the cheap. Tons on Kijiji and FB but I have no idea on brands, what to look for, and the prices are all over the place: Nikishi, Miyata, Norco... $300?!
But a Giant is 450$? No clue.
Also there’s a women’s bike? Dafuq.
Any tips on what to look for? Bikes are mind boggling.
EDIT: Also anyone has a spare front v-brake set (I think that's what it's called) so I have a back up to my coaster brake?

I dont think your bike has V-brake bosses, you probably want to run a regular road caliper brake. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Oh okay, any recommendations? I'm definitely newbie when it comes to bicycles. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Clean lines... you remove brakes, not add them... how fast do you honestly think you’re gonna go that you need more stopping power???
You could probably get away with something cheap, just see if you can find a long reach caliper and check if your fork has a mounting hole for that kind of brake. The key will be the long reach because you look like you're running some pretty big tires.
this, road caliper brakes will be too small as they are good only up to 700x28.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
maybe something like this?

you're best bet is to maybe go to The Bike Shop or Bike and Brew, they work on fixie bikes so they might be able to source you the right brake levers and calipers for you.
According to Strava, I average 13kph but got up to 30kph! :OThis quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

Aaaaaaayyyy good deal
Norco Avanti SL
Going to do a closer look later today but going to seek advice from the gurus on how to maintain this bad boy
Edit: needs a tune up as the brakes don’t work well so new cables or tighten it up, new seat, bar tape, shorter quill stem because I’m stretching my arms to reach down but shifts pretty well. Is “quill length” the right term to use? I want a closer handlebar experience
12 Speed with Suntour Seven, Dia Comp brakes...

"Special plain gauge", whatever that means.

when I saw the Tange sticker I just assumed it was some old school badass chromoly.
Same and from what I read, the Avanti SL is chromoly but it said 'Hi Tensile' so I'll assume it's not chromoly. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
From my very limited knowledge in frame building chromoly and hi-tensile are very similar in terms of frame builds and were terms used interchangeably back in the day, they are still steel frames and need to be treated the same in terms of protection. You'll want to get some frame saver and make sure you treat the inside as well. In regards to the quill stem you just want to get a shorter stem length. Just measure the length of the stem from center of head tube to center of mounting bracket and then get a stem 10-20mm shorter then that.
Special plain gauge probably means its a straight gauge steel and not butted...fancy marketing words
In terms of bike mechanics, should I also try and move the saddle forward vs finding a shorter stem? This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
