    Default Bike build and maintenance

has anyone done this. Rode with a guy yesterday that had a fully ultegra kitted out, china built carbon frame, that he was into for less then $2000..equivalent would look to be 3500-$4500 retail.
has anyone gone this route, hints, tricks, tips, where to buy parts, etc. Kinda looking into a proper roadie for next year, and put the rove into winter work

blitz has built a couple recently if you look at the Post Your Bike thread and I'm about to build a new winter bike this week (hopefully) once my carbon fork comes in from Nashbar, and I know a few other members have done a build in the past.

I was really, really close to ordering one of those Chinese carbon CX frames. I had all the parts priced out and it worked out to be ~$1700-1800 with 105 parts and disc brakes. The only reason why I didn't go through with it was just cause I didn't need it and my Jake more than satisfies my needs, although I started playing with the idea of getting a titanium frame hahaha

If you're thinking of getting one, read through the two Chinese Carbon threads on roadbikereview.com. There's a lot of good info on who to buy from, which frames are good, and what to ask the sellers for when you're ordering.

I found the process pretty fun overall. I sourced my parts from pinkbike, chain reaction, Merlin cycles, probikekit, Jensen, and The Bike Shop here in town. Most online options offer free shipping so there's no reason not to shop around.

I think I have a complete extra set of 11 speed 105 shifters/derailleurs and some others stuff left over now that I think about it.

What you mean to say is you're short a frame

I'm definitely done spending money on bikes for this year, I justified building the Cross Bike because it would replace 2 of my existing bikes. Then I built another bike and I haven't sold any old ones yet, so I have 2 road bikes, 2 cross bikes, 2 fat bikes and a mountain bike.

I found both builds ended up costing a little more than I expected, but mainly due to me splurging on higher end parts. Here's the breakdown of my road build. The only thing left to upgrade in the future is the wheels, everything else is exactly how I would want it.

    Used Parts
    2001 Litespeed Ti Frame: $500
    Richtey Pro Carbon Fork: $135
    Dura-ace 9000 brakes: $120
    Sram Red 53/39 Cranks: $170
    Stem: $15

    Merlin Cycles
    Dura-ace 9100 shifters: $412
    Dura-ace 9100 Rear Derailleur: $210
    Dura-ace 9100 Front Derailleur: $112
    Dura-ace 9100 11-30 Cassette: $230
    SRAM Bottom Bracket: $35

    Chain Reaction
    Shimano 6800 Wheels: $380
    Easton EC-70 Seatpost: $120
    Jagwire Cable Kit: $50
    Shimano Chain: $30
    Schwalbe One Tubeless tires: $110

    Amazon
    FSA Compact Carbon Bars $99

    On-one Cycles
    Selle Esse Seat - $60

    The Bike Shop
    Cane Creek Headset $90
    Brooks Bar Tape: $35

    Total: $3013

Anyone good at dialing in the derailleurs? I'm having a heck of a time getting them just right. I don't even know how many Youtube videos I've watched and re-watched. It's almost there, but not quite. If anyone can give me a hand in exchange for beer, I'd totally appreciate it.

Could it possibly be bent, or overused? Maybe it's time to try a new or replacement derailleur (not sure if you need front, rear, or both)?

It could be the derailleur hanger being bent too.

I've dealt with the following scenarios on multiple occasions when a rear mech doesn't seem to shift up / down properly:
    - Bent derailleur hanger
    - Dirty housings, kinked housings, dirty or frayed cables
    - And the most annoying one is having a cable that's not properly routed at the derailleur clamp. Starts to pull the derailleur in a direction it's not designed to causing it to track improperly

There are additional things that will cause decreased shifting quality like chain condition, clutch tension setting (if you have clutch-mech). If you've confirmed housings/cables/hanger is all OK my next stop would be a bike shop.

The one thing I didn't think to look and this is exactly what it ended up being.

in preparation of moving the 105 5500 groupset off the road bike to the CX, I found out that it doesn't use the newer hollowtech II crank/BB system.

I've ordered a Crank extractor and BB remover off CR
    https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/...r/rp-prod10181
    https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/...l/rp-prod86711

but from the picture I posted, the outer part of the BB has some grooves as well, are these just for design or did I order the wrong BB remover?

Looks like you bought the wrong BB tool unless that BB also has internal grooves. I should have the tool to remove the BB cups (as well as the crank) if you're in a bind - just send me a PM.

What does that have to do with building a bike? I only see one frame there and it's not a road bike....

Before you go any further, do you know if the old bottom bracket even fits the CX frame?

thanks for the offer, i'll PM you if I do need it.

quick google of the BB-5500 and it does look like the left side has grooves on the outside and inside, so I'm thinking I got the right tool

what's the best way to know? i measured the BB shell on both the Opus and Kona and both 68mm, I'd be surprised if it was italian thread

Yup - looks like that should work. You'll want to measure the BB shell width (68mm or 73mm) on both bikes to see if you need spacers. Assuming your old bike isn't Italian thread you should be able to move the BB over.
